Apologies, it was actually a maintenance vehicle that had been left on the line, but on a normal railway signalling would still have saved the day!

Still people died, and as you said a simple signal would be enough, maglev in the spacious regions of the US should be ok .

Not all maintenance vehicles trigger track circuits - if it occurred in a possession on our railway there would still be an accident.

Of course the difference is the Transrapid doesn't have engineering possessions since it's only one line.
