If a passenger chooses to pay no attention to any information screens or listen to any announcements, or doesn't bother to read any available timetables it is no-one's fault but there own. Funnily enough there are many many many other services that run between Eastbourne and Gatwick so it's hardly the end of world when this service doesn't call there.

Yes, and were there any trains that stopped at Purley Oaks station subsequently? The fact that through trains were running is irrelevant to anyone on that platform except cranks. Therefore the sign was right.

Don't argue when you're clearly loosing. You said yourself you don't know what you're talking about. It was also probably a train which had started out on its route, got stuck and was either 1) running ECS back to depot or 2) completing its current run .
