I'd still argue that it wouldnt have managed it pulling coaching stock. I reckon without Mk3's in tow, a HST could hit 300kph.

Back in the day, when Manchester Picc-Manchester Airport movements were part of the XC network, Virgin XC used to run 158s. However in days of shortage (they were also used down in Swindon), they'd use 43+mk3+mk3+43.

I remember a funny story of a driver who said he'd hit linespeed (90mph) within 100 yards of the end of the platform haha.

They're not underpowered, the 43.

TEP 70 (2EM62 modernised caterpilar edition, siemens euroruner goes too) always going near home, but i couldn't imagine that something like this (TEP 80) could reach 200 and more km/h.
