A very sad day for aviation...

It's dramatic crashes like these which make the front page headlines which destroy public confidence in air safety... - it's still the safest mode of transport. Nonetheless the statistic doesn't stop me making a quick prayer upon each take-off and landing. On the other hand I never pray before getting into my car and I'm far more likely to die..
Any opinions expressed are purely mine and not that of any employer, past or present.

Trouble with air accidents is that while rare, if something major does happen you are far more likely to die when it does eventually happen. Still, I marvel at flying and love it. Shame about events like this really...

For what it's worth, the airplane was apparently the 8F2 model registered TC-JGE

I guess I see what you're trying to say Gavin, but I'd call this pretty major and only 9 out of 135 are dead, if you have a 'major' car accident there's probably a higher likelihood than that on dying. In other cases lke major failures much higher up in the sky you're right about the slim survival chance though.

If i recall correctly there are 50 heavy wounded, the 2 pilots are still in the cockpit. If he just flew a few hundred meters further, he would have hit a highway intersection.

Indeed, it seems like the more people a mode of transport carries the less likely it is to get into an accident. Those accidents look A LOT worse though because usually A LOT of people die at the same time.

An interesting News article, this one:
http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/20 ... utiny.html

It seems to be suggesting that one of the crew in the cockpit might have survived were it not for the anti hijacking door installed due to 9/11. Apparently the door was so good the emergency services couldn't get through it fast enough to save him.
