Yeah I got that, I suppose I was asking more why he did it. Anyway, new screenshots shall follow soon (note, my definition of soon probably differs considerably from that of yours).

Sounds fairly similar to mine, "soon" = "when I can be arsed".

Time for a pb_build mountain game again!

1. Hamburg hasn't grown much since it recieved it's station back in the 1920s but traffic has. The initial single track station with tight curved approach was in adequate and the station was doubled and recently the line was realigned to approach the station straight on over the truss bridges rather than over the old bridge which stood down near where the water tower now stands.

2. Bonn lies at the edge of a small plateau and the railway company has exploited this feature to make a not insubstantial freight yard mainly serving the sawmill but seasonal agricultural traffic also frequents the yard area. The lines around here are electrified to allow heavier trains to be hauled up the steep grades without having to double head trains.

3. Oldenburg, terminus of the passenger line through Bonn has a peculiar layout due to the lines into the town being built at different times.

4. Ludwigshafen, the centre of the network. At this moment eerily quiet.

5. Zwickau lies at the end of two mountain passes and as such has an awkward operational layout with through trains having to reverse to continue their journey. The flagship "Alpine Express" from Ludwigshafen to Ratisbon runs into the only intermediate stop on the journey before climbing up to the Herne Pass where local has just completed the climb. A VT-08 idles in platform 2 with a semi-fast to Ludwigshafen.

6. Ratisbon is currently served by one line but if the company's aspirations are met this will expand greatly. After Leverkusen station the line climbs steeply and doubles back on itself to reach the Herne Pass.

7. Dresden station marks the end of the Ludwigshafen local services and the beginning of the twisting and steep line to Zwickau. Before now the line has stuck to the valley floor. The bridge also marks the end of double track which by now extends all the way from Zwickau to here.

8. Hagen lies on the coast and is a very "compact" settlement. The station would ideally be double track to enable an increased Ludwigshafen to Osnabruecke service (currently all trains that call here continue to Oldenburg). A large amount of freight passes through to/from Bonn Yard. An empty livestock train slows as it enters the passing loop to the north of the station.

Lots of single platform stations, they won't be fun to expand!
Can't imagine why the eastern part of the map is mostly untouched - looks a bit hilly!

The eastern bit is rather hilly, yes. The two main lines have been built with specific reasons. Ludwigshafen - Ratisbon was to link the 2 biggest towns on the map so everywhere in between got linked up. Ludwigshafen - Bonn was for industry and the line got extended to Oldenburg and Essen for more industry. Going up to Hamm has little incentive at the moment as it'll be massively expensive.

As for single platform stations, of course it'll be something that I'll come to regret but it was all I could afford! Stations are hideously expensive!

Ameecher, those screenshots are just brilliant. Keep them coming :)
I'd like to request a screenshot of Essen.

May I ask for a scenario (or at least a savegame) of this map? I'd like to try my luck with it :)

Don´t assume it´s anything German, Regiovogel. That´s clearly Oldenburg in Norfolk. :P

Yes I am aware of e-grvts but I am using the German Road Vehicle set and yes I know I can use to sets simultaneously but I have nothing against the default freight RVs. I may add E-Grvts later should I need it, I doubt I will though :)
Attached is a scenario. Using nightly r14615.

As for the Oldenburg in Norfolk comment, I'm gonna ignore that! ;)

Anyway, thanks for the comments guys! :)

I like a lot your way to play with TTD, your railways look very realistic. For example, Oldenburg can appear at first sight as a crazy station, but in fact this track configuration is common when two railway companies end in the same town. Wien Südbahnhof has a similar layout, although with more tracks and now under an one company (ÖBB); another example that I know is Sassuolo (Italy), terminal of two private railways from Modena (company: FER) and Reggio Emilia (ACT), but in this case the interchange track was abandoned in the 1980s and later removed.
