Derailment at Doncaster

Post by Badger »

All I can say is "whoops!"

Pics can be seen here. Credit to Alan Padley.

Gave me a headache at work, Northern ran a rail replacement bus between Doncaster and Wakefield Westgate for a good part of the day. Platforms 6/7/8 at Doncaster couldn't be accessed from the north until 16.10.

Looks like a case of the points switching beneath the train. Bet the punters at Doncaster were loving that

From WNXX:

all 3 axles of front bogie off the road, looks like points have split underneath it, front and rear of loco skewed accross the road in different directions!

Cheers IKB

A contributing factor may be subsidence of the permanent way under and nearby. Given the presence of the team testing the level of ground in the pic.

Oooherr. Just as well it happened to a freight train and not a 225.

Driver on 6F09 (66201) deserves a pat on the back.....without his quick thinking there could have been fatalities.....and a lot more than just the leading bogie off the road.....
He was running on a clear signal thru what should have been a possession.
Sounds like a serious breakdown of communication between NR/PWAY etc.

by the way they were talking about it on the news/radio it sounded like no trains were able to get in or out of Doncaster for most of the day! i was at Doncaster station at around 7.30pm and most of the east coast mainline (and local services) seemed to be on time. I checked the national express website at around 4pm and it said there were major delays of 1 hour and 30 mins.

Train that was fouling any other line appeared to be moved at some point in full daylight though, according to Badger's pics, so might have had other platforms re-opened.

The story going at the moment seems to be a breakdown of communication between trackworkers and signallers, ie, the signallers didn't know there were people working which is what's known in the trade as a "f*** up".
