Re: NewGRF set proposal: Special Vehicles (Heavy Equipment?)
Thanks for the comments so far, right now I'm happy to do the drawing, but if anyone wants to contribute it would be quite easy to get stats on the following:
Caterpillar or Terex 35 ton and 50 ton dump trucks
Foremost: Nodwell, Delta and Terrabus http://foremost.ca/
JCB Fastrac http://jcb.com
Transporters http://www.palingtransporter.com/
Caterpillar, Volvo, Moxy or JCB Articulated Dump Trucks
What would be useful is:
- top speed
- weight
- capacity
- horsepower
I'll start a tracking table soon.
cheers,
Andy

Well sometimes we find tomorrow comes sooner than we expected... Don't think that big one's going to fit in a traditional road freight station thoughandythenorth wrote:Hmm they've got to be able to pass each other without looking like they should crash. I might mod the existing sprite to look like a 35 ton truck, and grab a few extra pixels for a bigger 50 ton version. But not until tomorrow!Zephyris wrote:Wider is probably less of a problem than taller, give it a go!

Re: NewGRF set proposal: Special Vehicles (Heavy Equipment?)
Bloody brilliant! This is what I like about the notion of the expanded engine pool, dedicated little sets that can bolt on the side of existing vehicle sets to cater to specific tasks such as this. Only problem is picking your larger vehicle set to ballance your sets economic model against
.
Awesome stuff, I like it

And as requested Andy, here is a table of stats for all of your requested vehicles except the Paling Transporter. I'm missing a few stats but it's nearly complete. I'll give you the spreadsheet and the websites for specific pictures.
John Deere ADTs
Valmet Forwarders
Komatsu Mining Trucks

Good set of statistics, when the sprites are done I will gladly have a go at coding!
Re: NewGRF set proposal: Special Vehicles (Heavy Equipment?)
Excellent idea for a set. Too bad they can't be bigger!

Re: NewGRF set proposal: Special Vehicles (Heavy Equipment?)
Good stats thanks. I'm planning to tweak some of the real stats to get good game balance and give players more reasons than just eye candy to use different vehicles.Pingaware wrote:And as requested Andy, here is a table of stats for all of your requested vehicles except the Paling Transporter. True - they should be a bit larger compared to other RVs, but compare the mining trucks to the SD40s in the rail yard the teaser image - everything looks ok on on the same map which is what it's all about I guess. Scale in TTD is not consistent anywayrbenevid wrote:Excellent idea for a set. Too bad they can't be bigger!

I'm away for a few days, when I get back I'll finish all the sprites for one vehicle to get my head around different angles, loads company colours etc. Zephryis - would you fancy doing a test grf when the first sprites are done?

Re: NewGRF set proposal: Special Vehicles (Heavy Equipment?)
really really cool set!
but u might want to try to code it as well yourself, this (most likely) only require the most basic codeing
I can help you out if you want to

Re: NewGRF set proposal: Special Vehicles (Heavy Equipment?)
I do want to learn grf coding, but I don't want to learn everything at once right now - I want to get the drawing down first. It figure it's more fun to work with one or more coder - they contribute ideas as well.DJ Nekkid wrote:really really cool set!

Also, I haven't figured how to build/use the various grf tools on Mac OS X, that's a bit of blocker

Re: NewGRF set proposal: Special Vehicles (Heavy Equipment?)
yea ... good point... i have no idea if nforenum or grfcodec is supported on mac ... But as i saied, until u need articulation, a single "free" road vehicle is pretty much as basic as you can get
if you PM me a set of sprites, ill make a "basic tutorial" for you
(IE: all 8 directions empty, and all d8 irections with full load)

Re: NewGRF set proposal: Special Vehicles (Heavy Equipment?)
NFORenum should be completely endian-neutral.DJ Nekkid wrote:yea ... good point... i have no idea if nforenum or grfcodec is supported on mac
GRFCodec is endian-sensitive, but should compile for the correct endianness.
In both cases, you'll have to compile them yourself.
To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

Re: NewGRF set proposal: Special Vehicles (Heavy Equipment?)
I've started working up more views on the large mining truck:
(updated with another side view)
My decision is to use the second company colour as the main colour for some of these vehicles. I'm balancing this set against GRTVS, and I want it to fit in graphically, but I'd like to offer some variety between regular vehicles and heavy equipment. I think the 2nd company colour is a good way to do this - it also allows realistic players to make these vehicles yellow if they so choose, or to fit in with the company fleet.

Thats looks quite good!
Only thing is that side view seems to tall. Maybe cargo bin some pixel shorter! If You understand what i mean!

Re: NewGRF set proposal: Special Vehicles (Heavy Equipment?)
You could be right. The truck is intended to be used with GRVTS, and is about 2px wider than those vehicles to get the right sense of scale (it should feel bigger than a GRVTS truck. I'll draw a smaller variation and see what it looks like.ISA wrote:Thats looks quite good!

(Update) Here's the slightly smaller (1px less wide) version. I think I prefer it.
