Thanks for the advice chaps. Since I am blender noob, can you give me some pointers on increasing the shine in blender 3d?

I've spend some time working on the small details (some of which are hardly visible in this image) which you rightly point out make the model come together, still more to do though. I havent thought a great deal about rescaling but it shouldnt be a big job (reduce length and knock off some windows).

Ben, the backend issue is indeed caused by the sloping of the sides.

Look's good with the noise visible on that last image, but that is rendered slightly large. You should increase the noise unrealistically so it shows through on a correctly sized render I think, as on the previous image it appears slightly smooth.

The roof should have more random elements on it also, as well as general dirt and wear. It's currently a little smooth. Basically in the same way as you have added small bits to the rest of the train.

The windows could do with being slightly reflective and transparent also. (Some very basic chair shapes inside with a random texture that breaks up the shape would do it)

Apart from that it looks really nice, and I think the twisting issue I said about before will vanish when carriages are attached behind it.

Ok i have cut out the windows.. took my ages to do. Added an interior. Added some wear to the roof.. although the texture needs to be enlarged. :-)

I have created a tar file with this train in, check it out :-) this is for geek toos zoomin build BTW

PS. its a first draft but it works!

Ben, Geek too: Could you make available your latest lighting setup for me? I have used the one on the wiki but it seems to only have 4 frames on it, so my train morphs into the 8bit variant when going around corners.

This is a good way for me to see areas that need improvement, from what i can see:

The roof needs to be lighter in order to show more definition.
Needs more shine.
Windows need to be a little more transparent.
Might Drop a door so that there are 2 windows.
Length of train needs to be reduced, it seems to be melding into the next compartment of the train.

Looks good, I can only agree to the points that you have already listed in terms of improvements.

The train I have made only has 4 angles any way, but for the l -- angles I just rotated it 45 degrees and set it to render again...

First off, great work.

It looks fantastic from the normal view and that's what really matters. The extra zoom levels are really nothing but eye candy and too many small details can actually ruin the normal view (make the contrast to low).

About the roof: I don't like the texture on it, it looks like waves or something. You should make the noise much smaller. I would change the specular as well so it "shines" a bit more. With the current lightning setup, this works really well.

Look very good to me :D
So if I understand it right, it replaces the class 158 in the UKRS set?

This replaces the dash in the original set, I believe.

Thanks for your comments :)

As a side project I'm going to see if i can bring some automation to sprite generation so we can get the tars generated quicker / easier, i'm thinking a GUI with 8 sprite windows that you can load sprites into with maybe some track tiles for us to be able to align the sprites to, and then save the pngcodec stuff to the generated pngs.. but that is for a different thread me thinks.

Looks good. For the l and -- angles you will need to stretch it to about 135% the size...
