Station names

Post by Gord »

OK, just for fun, here's an idea of something pointless to do.

I remember on a comedy show a few years ago they were playig a game where you had to name all of the last names of football teams in the country...for example, city, town, albion, united, wednesday.

So how many can we think of for stations? Particularly those towns who have more than one station.

So here are some UK ones i know to get the ball rolling:

Thorpe, gardens, vauxhall, north, south, beach, high, city, victoria.....loads more i know but i'll open it up to other people!

They're about as close as you can get without actually being in Norfolk!

Other ones I can think of are:
Cromer High
Newark North gate
Newark Castle
Manchester Piccadilly

Depends how specific they are allowed to be. Lots of names have been dropped after another station in a city closed.

Hull Paragon
Edinburgh Waverley but is Haymarket allowed too?
Darlington Bank Top (although dropped officially)
Derby Midland
Greenock West
Warrington Bank Quay
Carlisle Citadel (although dropped officially)
Dundee Tay Bridge (also dropped officially)
Falkirk High and Grahamston
Portsmouth Harbour
Manchester Airport
Bristol Temple Meads

Technically all the London ones too but I won't go into that lol...

Smethwick Galton Bridge (technically IS a suffix - the station previously in Smethwick was Smethwick East).

The usual other suffixes must apply?

I'll drop in, thus, with:

Birmingham New Street
Birmingham Snow Hill
Birmingham Moor Street
Worcester Shrub Hill
Worcester Foregate Street

There's also

Smethwick Rolfe Street

And the obligatory

Stourbridge Junction

and

Stourbridge Town

Lichfield and Rugeley Trent Valley, too.

Manchester Oxford Road, Horwich Parkway (lots of other parkways too...), Liverpool Lime Street, Wigan Wallgate, Wigan North Western, Euxton Balshaw Lane, Blackpool North, Blackpool South, Oxenholme Lake District, Penrith North Lakes and what about Glasgow Central?

I haven't even started on the London terminii ;) - London Euston, Liverpool Street, Victoria, King's Cross, Marylebone, Waterloo, St. Pancras, Charing Cross, Fenchurch Street. Oh, and Cannon Street.

All officially named London with the appropriate suffix, so are technically allowed here!

Two more - Acton Main Line and Birmingham International.

I'm done.

-EDIT-

Wanted to add Liverpool South Parkway, as it's different :D

... And Wrexham General.

Just a few off the top of my head

Southampton Airport Parkway
Bath Spa (and indeed Cheltenham Spa)
Nottingham Midland (dropped, but still used by saddos like me)

Ryde has three unique ones

Ryde Pier Head
Ryde Esplande
Ryde St John's Road

and although in London this one deserves an honourable mention

London St Pancras Midland Road

Does that win the prize for longest station name in the UK? Hmm, maybe apart from that one in Wales...

Those two are void, since they're actually the town's official name anyway.

That's like saying that you could use Garden City from Welwyn Garden City as a station suffix.

The longest name on the network that is officially used is NOT Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, since NR generally use Llanfairpwll or Llanfairpwllgwyngyll.

The longest name in use at the moment is in Wales though - Rhoose Cardiff International Airport.

Are you sure about that? At least, for Bath the Midland Railway's station (now closed) was Bath Green Park, and not Bath Spa Green Park.

I'm willing to concede Cheltenham...

Indeed, Parkey is right, do a wiki search for 'Bath' and you'll get the town, do a search for Bath Spa and you get the station. All maps i have looked at indicate it as Bath too.

As far as Cheltenham, it regularly has both names used afaik.

Leeds City, the historic name for the present Leeds station, recently overheard on a train's PA

and someone mentioned Darlington :) I've seen it on recent maps as 'Bank Top' about 2 or 3 years ago

Nope, Hoe Street is the former name of Walthamstow Central - see Wikipedia

There are several former ones in Dover - Town, Admiralty Pier, Harbour and Marine.

There are also Porthmadog (WHR), Tywyn Wharf, Ardrossan South Beach. Barry Links, Belfast Great Victoria Street, Bescott Stadium, Birkenhead Hamilton Square whose existence I know of thriugh Wikipedia.
Wikipedia also nots that Aylesbury Vale Parkway is scheduled to be built this year.

I'd be wary whether to allow this. The station merely serves Bescot Stadium (Home of Walsall FC), so I personally don't think that it's worth the suffix.
