Um, we don't all use OpenTTD you know, just for the record.

OpenTTD is a reverse engineered version of TTD which has been greatly improved upon by the OpenTTD Devs.
The other TTD extending project is TTDpatch which memory hacks TTD to improve it, unlike OpenTTD it allows you to run TTD as it was given the right configuration (with just applying the fix for running TTD on Windows 2000, XP and Vista).

A lot of people will argue over which is better, but I suggest you try both out and use the one suits you.

Viper:
TTD stands for Transport Tycoon Deluxe.
there is no deluxe deluxe version.
OpenTTD works for Transport Tycoon Deluxe
TTDpatch works for Transport Tycoon Deluxe
Plain TTD is only played by a few people on this forum. if that

I suggest downloading both OpenTTD and the Patch, then deciding which one you like better. I think both have their own advantages.
Let's try not to get into an argument over which one is better, that would never get anywhere.

basically: if you like a whole range of new features, which do affect game play (mostly in a positive way in my opinion), you'd want OpenTTD. If you want to stick more to the original game, use TTDPatch

There aren't really that many gameplay differences between Patch and Open, IMO. UI differences, yes, but the gameplay differences are minimal.
To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

I've played both and i can't say that either has a huge advantage over the other. OTTD has multiplayer and larger maps but Patch has route restriction, PBS, new GRF (Open is behind)

I don't know much, but doesn't OpenTTD support the €uro, and TTD not?

I just know I have a DOS version of tycoon, and the windows version (OpenTTD) which gives me tonns more options, which in it's end is very hard to configure.

Also openttd has an additional extended land engine, to calculate trees and rocks (and probably even towns) and place them in a more 'logical' or natural way (I could be wrong but the way I explained here is the perception I have of enabling this option).

ProDigit: the patch has the euro, the latest patch has a new terrain generator, but has not got a new interface to get the most out of it. I find OTTD is easy to configure, but the patch requires some manual setup.
