New menu for OTTD

Post by knedle »

I was a bit bored today, so I started making new menu bar for OTTD, just wanted to show it to someone and get a few constructive opinions about it.

Very modern!
I suggest some code to be able to skin... (Very hard job though, from what I understand. A simple patch propably will not suffice.)

I like it, and would use it if completed.

Speaking of menu bars and interfaces, I like in other games how they're all becoming very customizable. From the position of the menus, to the size of them. Very interesting stuff.

That's very nice indeed. But I'm really attached to the old-skool menu. I grew up with that thing!

As a skin it would be really cool. Is there something as NewGRF for menubar?

Well, apart from the red background it should be possible to replace all the icons using a newgrf Action A. The fast-forward button will be a little more tricky though as it's in openttd.grf and so far there's no mechanism for explicitly replacing parts of that.

Action A works for replacing OpenTTD specific sprites, but their sprite "number" can change each time we add/remove/move sprites.

Yes there is:
http://www.tt-forums.net/viewtopic.php? ... sc&start=0
Go to end of above page and get it!
NOTE: Only for version of OpenTTD that supports 32bit graphics.

My eyes!
The toolbar is good, the blurred picture however has blinded me.

couldn't you have cropped it instead, to make the toolbar take up most of the image, that screenshot really makes you eyes hurt.
JPG SUX!!! USE PNG!!!
There are times when JPG is useful, TTD screenshots is not one of them. Please use PNG instead.

Why do you have secret, MI5 or CIA or FBI or KGB trains that no one can look at?

I'm sorry to bring some negativity into the thread, but I just don't like it. Why not?

- Right now you have white, light grey, dark grey, black, blue, darker blue, and some kind of silver outlining. There are too many colours in this design, and so...

- The icons suffer because there is no unified theme to the menu bar. Some are white, some are black, some are both, some are grey etc.

- Some of the icons - it is impossible to determine what the functionality is without remembering the mental map of how TTD works. Yes, they're unclear.

- You shouldn't have to squint at an icon to determine what it means! The only ones most obvious there are the save icon, the graph icon, and the help icon. The others need a few seconds.

However as TTD is a very old game it does make sense to give a little interface lift to it - to keep it 'up to date'. Keep trying. :) (although purists will probably want the toolbar just the way it is, thank you!)

I think Hes spot on with the purist notion.

Although i also agree that it could use a little face lift, perhaps in making the icons more dynamic but still quite comparable to the orgional menu bar button graphics.

Perhaps an example is my avatar, how i have remade the logo for the game in illustrator. Feel free to differ because its not that great.

I don't know.. I mean if you're restyling the menu bar, why stop there? I've found the interface to be clunky at best in some places. The icongraphy is good, but it's all dated...

I suppose the pixelled look stuck because the game uses that style. I'm up for a clean, fresh look - but I would have a way to bring the 'classic' look back for people who like that UI.

Your icon 'rework' doesn't look great to be honest.. I mean it's practically the same thing just on heavy gradient backgrounds (ugly).

More or less what i was gettin at. :P

I broke my quote. Meh too lazy to fix.

Btw. the only reason i remade the logo was so that no one would go. *Look sapphire knows how to steal off the internet*

Rather they'll say * Sapphire knows how to Copy paste with pen tool*
