people don't automagically upload to trunk.. what's best to do is write patches that fix/add things, then post the .diffs somewhere on the forums so the team working on it can take a look at it.. if they like it, it'll be added.

How to learn C/C++

Post by benc »

We were all newbies once.

To Freedom I would recommend learning C/C++ on a project that's at least past version 1.0. Preferably 2.0 or higher.

I.e., not OpenTTD, which is currently on version 0.5. Despite being several years old, it's still a young project. Honestly, the codebase is changing too rapidly and drastically for someone who's not fluent in C/C++ to fully understand.

Wondering how to find such a project? Sourceforge is a good place to start.

Technically, most of the code is more or less still C (no C++ constructions like templates, objects, object hierarchy ... ), so yes, for learning C++, better seek another project. For contributing to OpenTTD ... learn C++ or contribute some other way (create graphics, report bugs, etc ....)
If you need something, do it yourself or it will be never done.

My patches: Extra large maps (1048576 high, 1048576 wide) (FS#1059), Vehicle + Town + Industry console commands (FS#1060), few minor patches (FS#2820, FS#1521, FS#2837, FS#2843), AI debugging facility

Other: Very large ships NewGRF, Bilbo's multiplayer patch pack v5 (for OpenTTD 0.7.3)
