For me, when I say online, I want to say an OpenTTD version who is notPikkaBird wrote:What is an online OTTD?
If you mean multiplayer OTTD played over the internet, that does certainly exist.
installed in the PC player, but it is available in a server like the Java game
what we find in Internet ...
But I think for this, it is mandatory transform OpenTTD C code into Java code ...

You mean like OpenTTD in a applet?!
*shrugs*
EDIT: Applets are probably to slow, and the rewrite from C to Java isn't worth the hassle IMHO.

You can play it anywhere, just pack the OTTD dir and upload it somewhere, next time you want to play it download it and run OTTD.
Don't panic - My YouTube channel - Follow me on twitter (@XeryusTC) - Play Tribes: Ascend - Tired of Dropbox? Try SpiderOak (use this link and we both get 1GB extra space)

Or a web server you can download them from.Doctor ZXXI wrote:Of course, but I must have an USB key with my OpenTTD files ...XeryusTC wrote:You can play it anywhere, just pack the OTTD dir and upload it somewhere, next time you want to play it download it and run OTTD.
Or you need to log in every time when you want to play.
Or you have some other inconvenience.
If you want to play everywhere with trains etc. then you should get a cellphone and start a real life transport company...

Online OpenTTD, it's only a proposal ...XeryusTC wrote:Or a web server you can download them from.Doctor ZXXI wrote:Of course, but I must have an USB key with my OpenTTD files ...XeryusTC wrote:You can play it anywhere, just pack the OTTD dir and upload it somewhere, next time you want to play it download it and run OTTD.

making it an web server application leaves the question of having a web server to run it on ...
I sure would hate looking at pr0n adds and pop-up windows while playing OpenTTD.

Code: Select all
if (YouAreHappyAndYouKnowIt) {
ClapYourHands();
}
I always play OTTD from a portable device (that is, USB Flash Drive) and take it along everywhere I go.
This lets me finish a game at let's say school, which i started at home.
I think it requires way too much hardware to make it possible to play this game webbased. You probably want to store your savegames and newgrf's somewhere, don't you? And it still has to be free...

Don't take it personally, its only a suggestion and there is many valid concerns to any suggestion. If the good things in a suggestion outweighs the bad, then someone might just include that suggestion in OpenTTD and that is why it is important for everyone to give their opinion.Doctor ZXXI wrote:It's only a suggestion, that's all !

Although the suggestion have some good points, it is not something faisable (and not worth the conversion effort).
The code (and of course the binary) is way too big and complex to be downscaled to an applet (or whatever the style of Online Coding Platform required).
As others suggest, transporting your OpenTTD environment on a USB key would be the best way to go. And you do not need a big key for that
512 meg will be quite enough, provided you do not save thousand of 2048*2048 games

If you are not ready to work a bit for your ideas, it means they don't count much for you.

No, you can just zip/rar your openttd.cfg folder, and upload it somewhere (e.g. your provider's homepage space) so you can pull it down from any computer and play it right from the zipped folder. You can even make it self-extracting if the computer you are playing on has no zip capability.Doctor ZXXI wrote:Of course, but I must have an USB key with my OpenTTD files ...XeryusTC wrote:You can play it anywhere, just pack the OTTD dir and upload it somewhere, next time you want to play it download it and run OTTD.
If you want, you can even setup a small ftp server on your own PC at home so you can always grab the latest .SAV you are playing with.
Guess what! I got a fever! And the only prescription...... is MORE COWBELL!

I know this, but I think that an online OpenTTD could be cool ...

Biggest reasons not to do it:
- TTDs GRFs cannot be distributed to the client to perform all the drawing (legal issue)
- most newGRFs aren't allowed to be distributed to the client (legal issue)
- there would be much different versions, one for windows, one for OSX, one for linux as it isn't going to be rewritten in (for example) Java
