But you need to keep at LEAST one of everything, and make sure it goes somewhere where it will be looked after. No point in scrapping all of the first gen electric stock in Sydney, unless you know you've got one preserved set, that is going to be safe from vandals, and from the elements. Don't have to run it, don't have to do it up really nice, just preserve it somewhere, so that future generations can restore it, and show even younger people a train they have never seen before.
