Here is one:

Engines from the (standard, medium running cost[1]) game:
Kirby Paul Tank: 64km/h (cca 70sq/month), 1093 L/year
- 2.3sq/day, 3.0 L/day
Chaney 'Jubilee': 112km/h (cca 120 sq/month) 2625 L/year
- 4sq/day, 7.2 L/day
Lev4 'Chimaera': 643km/h (cca 700 sq/month) 4762 L/year
- 23sq/day, 13.0 L/day

In typical maglev train I carry 200 units of cargo per engine.
But the train returns empty, so I must calculate running cost per day twice.
This gives 1.30 L/day for 10 units -> 260L/200days (end of the graph).

In typical steam (from 100km/h on) train I carry 250 units of cargo
per engine. For 'Jubilee', returning empty:
This gives 0.58 L/day for 10u -> 116L/200days(e.o.g.)
The engine is five times slower than 20sq/day, so for comparison in
graph, we should use 2.9L/day and 580L/200days.

So in typical situations (for standard running cost) the optimal distance
will be like 20 days shorter.
The extreme is one car (25 tons) with Kirby Tank, we get 2.4L/day,
resp 21L/day after speed correction. So this engine cannot be used with
only one car, fully loaded only in one direction.

[1] "low" running cost - multiply by 0.75
"high" running cost - multiply by 1.125

The situation is different in UK set, where the running costs are much
higher.
