Open TTD GRF File Library

Post by shagademis »

I am planning on making a website to show all new grf files for open ttd (similar to grf crawler but specifically for open ttd), if you would like your grf file to be included please reply stating:

Authors name:
GRF name:
GRF description:
Link to your website:

Many thanks, shagademis

Doesn't GRFCrawler state OpenTTD GRF files too?

seems un-needed to me.

The whole idea seems a pointless, with GRFCrawler in existence.

grfcrawler is for both ttdp and ottd wich can confuse people as A LOT of files are not compatable with open ttd. i am also hoping to develop it with my recomendations and packs like mod packs

There is the GRF Crawler but then there is the Openttd wiki GRF list (just for openttd).

your proposed list does sound repetitive but I would visit it.

what i plan isn't just going to be a list. i want it to be a place where people who dont know much about grf files can see what they can use, how they can use it. also i want to make "packs" of grf files that will go well together to make a specific look.

Sounds good, put me on your mailing list. Or at the very least reply to this thread which I have marked for notification. :)

I'd be in favor of a more comprehensive, OpenTTD-only, well-organized resource. Recommendations and thumbnails for each GRF/GRF set would be a welcome addition as well.

Good luck, shagademis.

You know, you may want to crawl through these forums yourself to find GRF files people have created, and then ask them if you can put their files on your site. I doubt many people would say "no."

Might get better response than just relying on them to post in this thread (though there's nothing wrong w/ this thread, of course.)

I agree that if you make it a community thing and it works, it will be good. I like the idea of preview shots of the grfs etc. and Id also suggest maybe a user ranking system, so that we can all get an idea of what others think of the sets?

that was one idea i had. like i said i have a week off school starting tomorrow so i can start coding and designing a website, i have already asked a friend about web hosting so that should be fine. i will have space to upload grf files so external mirrors wont be nessecary.

Wouldnt it be easier and simpler just to have a list that links to where the files are already hosted? Most can be found in GRFcrawler, and some are best found direct from the developer's website - as they are the most up-to-date.

[yet another .grf list]

> [...] some are best found direct from the developer's website - as they are the most up-to-date.

And many of the developers would like to have their .grfs exclusively on their own pages as recent incidents have already shown. GrfCrawler has been set up as a central hub for all types of files and I don´t think it´d be asked too much of "Joe OTTD" to read whether a .grf is compatible to OTTD or not.

To be honest, GRF Crawler is perfectly fine for this. I don't think it's too hard to remember what works in OTTD and what doesn't.

Newvehicles does, so any vehicle set is fine.

Newhouses doesn't (I don't think), so TTRS-v3 isn't fine.

Seems simple enough.

Spend your half term doing something more worthwhile.

I think GRFCrawler is fine already, and there's an OTTD compatible flag feature in development for it, so it'll increase awareness of what'll work and what won't.
