release 5.0

Post by dtb1322 »

I have been playing OpenTTD for a week now (release 04.80) and the thought of adding new graphics sounds great but at the same time the instructions scare me. I am not a computer person, just somewhat computer literate.

On the wiki page I have found "In OpenTTD 0.5.0 and later you can use the NewGRF Settings window to configure NewGRF files."

How does that work?

Do you still have to add them manually to the config file? or does 5.0 do that for you?

You have to copy your new GRF files in the folder /data/newgrf in you OpenTTD directory.

Then start OTTD 5.0
In the main screen, you'll get a "NewGRF" button (bottom right).
Use the add button and choose the GRFs you want to use.
Don't forget to click "apply".

Enjoy.

PS : All GRFs won't work correctly with OTTD, as most of them uses TTDPatch specific features. In any case, you'll just have to disable them if you experience problems with.

Thank you MagicBuzz, that is A LOT easier than re-writing the config file for those who are not comfortable enough to do that (including me).

I am aware that there are graphics not compatible with OPENTTD that were created with TTDPATCH. I have downloaded some if not all the graphics listed on the WIKI page and wish to use them soon. The WIKI page says that those listed have been tested on OPENTTD without any problems, has that been your experience?

i don't know about the grf listed in wiki.
i use http://grfcrawler.tt-forums.net

i try grf regardless potential bugs, and I disable wich ones that don't work properly.
most of the time, the grf will just not work, or not completely.

by exemple, TTRS3 will change your routes but not your houses.

With "not working" MagicBuzz means that some of the features in TTDPatch are not yet implemented in OpenTTD; it does not mean that it crashes the game or so.

The GRFs on the wiki should just work.

I will try them too!

Now can you direct me where to find the installation instructions to upgrade from 04.80 to 05.00? It's not on the readme.

Or just into your data directory. Or any arbitrary subfolder. No need for a folder called newgrf unless you want one.

TTRS and many other .grfs were developed for TTDPatch. Full implementation in OTTD takes time, and TTDPatch has several *years* head start on OTTD. We are catching up fast though.

So, please, no complaints about lack of support for x,y,z newgrf features. The devs are working hard to progress OTTD as much as possible.

i don't complain, i just say it may not work properly because it uses ttdpatch specific features. i didn't point to ottd lacks.

dtb1322 > tu upgrade ottd from 4.8 to 5.0, the most simple is to uninstall ottd 4.8, then install 5.0 in the same folder.

you may loose your config file, but saved games, grf and other stuffs should be kept. just make a backup of your ottd directory before if you want to be sure not loosing anything.

You don't need to uninstall anything. Just download the zip/exe file and install it over the old one. Done.

no problem with windows installer ?
i always prefer uninstalling first, so i'm sure i don't get 0.4.8 and 0.5.0 in the windows installed programs windows while 0.4.8 isn't installed anymore ;)

I upgraded this past weekend to 0.5.0-RC4 just like DarkVater said without any problems (run the exe and it installed over top of it).

Not sure if I understand your question. I upgraded to 0.5.0-RC4 in order to use some different graphics. I haven't yet, I'm still playing my first game since finding TTD (OTTD). From all the looks of it, it looks pretty easy to be able to use different graphics (instead of having to edit the config file).
