Please help new guy with graphics question about AV8 mod

I am using the latest openTTD (048) and I wanted to use the AV8 mod for aircraft taking off and landing but it isn't working.
I added

[newgrf]
AV*.........grf
(I'm at work and forgot the exact entry)

to the bottom of the cfg file and put the gfx file in /data folder.
The set shows up in the newgfx window in the game but I don't notice any difference in the planes behavior.
Any idea what I am doing wrong?
Also does the change (if working) affect saved games I download or only new games I create.

it really should be
[newgrf]
AV8.grf

also, I'm not sure if it will work in the outdated 0.4.8, you really should use a nightly if you plan to use GRFs. in the case of airplanes you might even need to use the miniin.

I also didn't use "AV8.gfx"
I used whatever the name of the .gfx file was.
I'll try that too.

Not ".gfx", but ".grf". There's an important difference.

It's pb_av8w.grf, and yes, you need the latest nightly, not 0.4.8.
