Still looking for building modeller?

Discuss, get help with, or post new graphics for TTDPatch and OpenTTD, using the NewGRF system, here. Graphics for plain TTD also acceptable here.

Still looking for building modeller?

Post by Skyrise »

Hello,

I will shortly introduce myself as a hardcore TTD fan and occasional editor of all sorts of games.

As a hobby I used to make skyscrapers (one of my fascinations) in blocks-playground Bryce5. I could use Blender, which shouldn't be too hard.

Then I would like to know if you are still looking for more buildings, AND... perhaps put in some taller buildings in OTTD, because there were pretty none in original TTD (which ofcourse is a shame for a skyscraper freak like me).

All simple buildings made in Bryce;

Ofcourse, I was not immediately thinking of 60-story high buildings for TTD, but perhaps elegant 10 to 20 story high buildings?

High buildings look good, but they cant be too high in the game, or you would never see the whole graphic at one time, and it would do nothing but obscure the view.

With each square being 12.5m, that would mean skyscrapers, like the taipei 101, would be a screen and a half high when most zoomed in.

Personally i think anything more than 8-10 tiles in height would be to high, but make them however you want.

Nope. Even on 1280x1024 it creates the need for a scrollbar.

As for the buildings - Incredible stuff!

Wow, they look great. A better place to take these efforts might be Open City - http://www.opencity.info - which is full 3D and would be able to make better use of these models.

YOU HAVE SPOKEN THE FORBIDDEN WORDS. Blasphemer!

I don't think I agree the models would be used better anywhere else, after all, Skyrise introduced himself as a hardcore TTD fan and described his intent to create buildings for OTTD.

Hi Skyrise

There are some people who want to just replicate the old graphics and not anything new, and they won't like the idea  . But others like myself wouldn't mind seeing some new buildings in it, personnally I think no Graphics that look good should be rejected, and yours look quite cool! Once the new Graphics are implemented it shouldn't be too difficult to add an option to play only with old stuff for those people who want nothing new.

The only problem is apparently that people start talking about how maybe new Grafix are never going to be implemented. I think that should be sorted out quickly ...

Otherwise: you will find specifications on the wiki main new grafix page. As you can see in the city building page there are quite some new graphics, and personnallly I'd prefer having a new graphics version with buildings that differ from the original to having no new graphics version at all.

The main question now will be what applications do you use? Can you handle Blender? As far as I know most people model in external applications and then import into Blender to texture and model.

I would be happy about more people working on the Graphics, thanks a lot for offering your help!

A big thing being waited for is support for new graphics.

we have a set of 32bpp Icon graphcis that are ready to be implimented now.

Many buildings can be interchanged into the game now. and also road graphics can be implimented without anything special done.

the project "will" happen, as so much work has gone into it, its not just going to not happen. but it does seem to be doing what open source always does, which is go at its own pace.

if people want the graphcis in faster, then we need people to step up and take a postition between graphics artists, and coders. to try and solve problems, and create standards for the file format etc... to meet

fits perfectly onto my screen aswell as 1280x1024.

EDIT, yes, IE has a scrolebar, seems to add a lot extra to the right of the pictures in IE.
JPG SUX!!! USE PNG!!!
There are times when JPG is useful, TTD screenshots is not one of them. Please use PNG instead.

Hey all!

Thanks for the reactions. I will give a quick look at opencity which promises to be a beautiful initiative.
About my buildings; I already mentioned that I was not going for 1,5 screen 80 story highrises, but perhaps smaller 10 story versions, that we already know in nowadays OTTD.

I will look trough the graphics wiki and give Blender a try.

Also, for isometric fantastic buildings that ARE too high, take a look at http://www.skyscrapercity.com at the Superpolis subforum! =)

Here too ;) But I guess there are tioll many people using lower resolutions, so I guess it's just nice to thumbnail the images ;)

Anyyway, the buildings look really nice, but it isn't really in the style of OpenTTD ;)
