Add new vehicules and others graphics - newbie questions

Post by falconbe »

Hi,

I have seen that with OTTD, we can add vehicules/graphics to the ones given with the OTTD version. To do so, if I have understand, we have to dowload "newgrf" files which are in fact ".grf" extension files (simply called newgrf because it means that they compatible with OTTD) and install them following the rules (see http://wiki.openttd.org/index.php/Newgrf or:
Wolf01 wrote:a simple howto

to make the sets work you have to:
1) open the openttd.cfg file
2) go at the endo of the file and write the following:

Code: Select all

[newgrf]
firstset.grf
secondset.grf
thirdset.grf
...
where firstset, secondset etc.. are the names of the .grf files of the set
the files are loaded from the 0 to the 2... so if the secondset has some features that are also in the firstset, the features of the firstset would be overwritten

if you want to have more than one combination of sets you can do this:

Code: Select all

[newgrf]
#COMBINATION 1
firstset.grf
secondset.grf

#COMBINATION 2
#another_firstset.grf
#another_secondset.grf
now you ca switch beetwen the combinations by removing the "#" from before one combination number and add it to the other combination, don't try to activate both combinations because can happen some errors
[/code]

3) Here is the default combination:

Code: Select all

[newgrf]
#DEFAULT
tempsetw.grf
arcticsetw.grf
newshipsw.grf
#cargosetw.grf
3) put your grf files into the data/ folder.

if you have some problems post them here: http://www.tt-forums.net/viewtopic.php?t=9376
My questions are :
- do I have well understood ?
- do the version of OTTD includes all "good" and last grf files ? If not, why (it could be an option in the menu) ?
- from what I understand, not all "grf"are compatible with OTTD because they were made for TTD ? Is this (http://wiki.openttd.org/index.php/GRF_list) the up-to-date list of compatible grf ?
- do a compilation with all existing good "grf" files for OTTD exist or do we have to dowload file per file?

- when installing a grf file, do this take the place of an old one or is it simply add to the existing ones ? What I would like to know because if I add a new grf about a truck or a train, is it add to the list of the existing ones or does it the place of another one ?

Thanks for your answer

I'm really new here so a little help would be welcome (even if the answer may be found somewhere else, I know)

they are called NewGRF files because they are new after the original 6 game GRF files. it has nothing to do with OpenTTD, TTDPatch calls them NewGRF too.

also, the combination stuff is bull-s***, this is the major reason the thread is no longer stickyfied. but the rest is accurate.

OpenTTD does not include any NewGRF files other than those required for it to run, this tells you how to install them afterwards.

not all GRF files are compatable with OpenTTD, no, but most are now. if you have a problem, it doesn't hurt to ask.

file per file is prefered, because its what YOU want, not what other people want, and most GRF files are not compatable with each other, since most are total replacement sets, and you can't totally replace something twice and still have the first lot of changes.

trains can not be added, only replaced. people make more trains per set by getting rid of monorail.
JPG SUX!!! USE PNG!!!
There are times when JPG is useful, TTD screenshots is not one of them. Please use PNG instead.

Aye - and they should be getting rid of maglev instead.

1. There are more of them.
2. They are ugly.

Must be a matter of opinion. I avoid Monorail for reason number two and periodically use Maglev for reason number one.

Speaking of which, Reason 1 is probably why they use Monorail.

I prefer maglev to monorail because the first monorail train becomes available in 2000 (or 2001?) and in the real world monorail trains are still mostly those slow, clumsy trains they have at theme parks.
Maglev, however, is more likely to be used for widespread transport in the future, and I like the way the trains float. :]

Hmm, not the quiet, profitable mass-transit systems found in Seattle, Sydney and Moscow? The biggest theme park example is Disney's monorail in Florida, which makes 7 million passenger journeys a year. It's not a theme park ride, it's transport to the theme park rides.

Also, lest it be known that Maglevs are classed as Monorails. As there is one rail. It's not the whole rubber tyres on concrete track with 30mph top speed, but it's still classed as that.
Transrapid is a German monorail system using magnetic levitation.

i dont think the japanese ones which is what the ttd opne appear to be based on are really monorails.

the japanese one travels inside a half tube. so you could argue that technically it's a monorail, but that's just trying to push a new concept forcibly in an old box ;)

The Japanese ones travel in massive concrete troughs with magnets in, whereas the transrapid can be on pylons, or can run along the floor. I'd say the TTD track resembled a Transrapid track not on pylons more than it resembles the big trough style of the JR-Maglev.

Could it be possible that ALL compatible versions of newgrf files would be given with OTTD, than anyone could install them or not (by changing the config file).

It would be more easy to follow... and to choose what we want or not...

Examples : I would like to start from 1920 but there are no vehicules, what can I install ?

It would also be interesting to get a PACK with all extansion in one...

PS : If by exemples I install the UK set... did the vehicules originally in OTTD are still present or do they disappear to only allow the UK set ? Is it the same with all sets ?

but non maglev monorails dont go over 100km peh hour so thats why i think they afre based on the transrapid. And no they wont be included all in one as they have incompatable licenses and just go to gfcrawler.tt-forums.net for grfs.

All newgrf replace original sprites/vehicles.

That's why you can't have UKRS and DBSETXL at the same time (those are 2 full replacement sets).

I was not sure of that... now it's clear... thanks

But would it be possible to increase the number of sprites/vehicules in order to use the original ones plus the differents existing sets ?

Simply to have more choices... like in reality, there are several constructors. Take the cars for instance, there are a lot : volvo, chrysler , renault, vw, ford and many more...

The grf sets are built to take up certain IDs. Expanding more IDs would not solve the problem, as the two sets would use up the same IDs. I doubt sets will recode themselves to work OTTD only either, as they were drawn + coded for TTDPatch.

Wouldn't it be possible to have the NewGRFs take up the next available ID for the same type?
