That's not maglev track, that's Shinkansen track!
As for the powered wagons... hmm... It appears 0x40 is returned for passenger carriages of the E231, and also for a few other engines... Any idea what should be returned?
Too bad the wagon length isn't consistent. Sometimes it's 29px, in other places it's 32px.

I have no idea about coding...
It's a pity that it doesn't work on OTTD. I can ask gl2 about this.
About the wagon length, indeed, the set has been contributed by a lot of artists, and it has a quite eclectic style...
For the next version, I'd like to add a lot of new trains that are not currently present. But that won't happen soon...

I don't think we can add any more trains, AIR we used all the slots. Coder can confirm this though, I compared the list to the rules a loooooooong time ago and things may have improved since.
BTW, I think it's time we worked on a Readme for the trains. We should release this publicly soon. Sanchimaru, do you have some time to work through the US trains readme, and do kind of the same thing for the Japanese trains? I can send you the US trains readme, and also the readme files I already did for the other Japanset components.

Ideally, something closer to the document that was produced for the Canadian Set would be best, or implement the extra info text for engines (Suitable for: Heavy freight, et cetera) that several sets use.
And regarding the re-coding of the Japanset buildings, haven't started yet. I've been busy with school work and re-coding the North American offerings (Still waiting on sprites for that aswell). I had a brief hiatus while my coding laptop was broken (Note to self, don't drop thinkpad on ground, it doesn't like it), but that's all sorted now (Note to self, be carefull with cmos battery holders, they're a b**** to solder back in place), so I'll go back over my stash of sprites and see where I shall begin.
Japanset will probably be my next coding project, followed by the japanset stations, and then I'll probably get back to working on my other station sets.
Note though, none of these grf's will be compatible with old saves, the third octet in all of my grf's will be 50 and onwards, these indicate the post-apocalyptic .grf's.

Implementing the extra text info is an excellent idea, is there any way we can ask that of gl2?
Aegir, I would suggest that you post a ZIP file of your working files from time to time. That can serve as a backup. Nobody does that and I don't know why, there have been many many many times that coders have had a crash and had to start over. The Japanset has been particularly plagued with this problem, it has happened 3 times thus far.

Really, losing backups of coding is not really a bad thing, sure it might stall a coder for a bit, but it gives the coder a good chance to revisit a lot of code and do things differently, usually for the better. It's the sprites that are the real important asset, and we've long had a good system for backing them up.

Well, if you'd prefer to PM them to me, you know I'm not going to do any coding. I'd only use them if you needed them, or if you disappeared (as has happened twice before with coders on this project - no, I'm not referring to gl2, but his predecessors).

Nah, I don't care if anyone stages a mutiny against me. I'm going to be putting into place a system of my own for managing backups, I haven't gotten arround to it yet because my other coding laptop had been out of action for a bit.
But really, I must stress, it's the stats and the sprites that are the essential things, code can be replaced easilly. atleast in my oppinion. Some other coders might have different oppinions on that, however.

Japan trains are heavily distributed-power oriented since their average station distance is too small, and distributed-power trains (EMUs) are better at accelarating and braking so they can handle these situations better.White Rabbit wrote:Too bad I also couldn't find a single locomotive with more than 300kN of tractive effort.
Try M250 + Koki 101! You can get 19,828hp with total of 4 motor cars ingame, I think this is more than enough for tracting other 12 container carriers ...
http://www.google.com/search?q=Mc250+super+rail+cargo
http://www.jrtr.net/jrtr36/pdf/photo.pdf (page 2)
In real world: (Mc250-M251)-(T261-T260)x6-(M251-Mc250), total 16 cars with total output of 3250kW, max speed 130km/h;
Conforms to same clearance standards as other passenger EMUs, even with comparable accelaration/deceleration performance to 'fit in' current passenger timetables!!
As its name claims, it's The Super Rail Cargo.
It's actually a lot of fun being forced to work with massive multiheading, it's what makes the Japanset different. I regularly run steam freights with two up front and a helper in the rear. This is true to history - my dad has a big framed photo of 4 steam locos pulling a freight over a picturesque stone trestle, and although you can't see it, I wouldn't be surprised if there was another in the rear. You also get very interesting effects with the TTD physics algorithm based on positioning the multiple locos in different places in the train, but I'll let people discover that for themselves.

A big CONGRATULATIONS to everyone who has worked to long and hard on this set! I particularly remember Raven, who we have not seen in a while but who did an immense amount of work in years past.
I will be updating the distribution website this week. I welcome screenshots and descriptions of trains, please post them somewhere appropriate or IM them to me - you can easily see what's missing on the distribution site
http://www.as-st.com/ttd/japan
We also do need a proper readme for the trains GRF, and also for the faces GRF. We'll need one for the signals too eventually.
Again, THANKS to all!

Japan Set
Thank you very much, all those who worked on this set, it rox! I like the Shinkansen in the game, though i wish more types could be available. Incidentally, the E4 MAX in the game does not seem to have a realistic capacity...it IS a double-deck commuter shinkansen after all, and in the real world they have a total capacity of 800 pax. You can view the website with more details on this shinkansenhere. It would be better if it could have a higher capacity...

Great that there is finally a release! good job =]
I see in the release thread that no one ever drew a nice shinkansen tunnel entrance... Maybe someone can ask the building geniuses like Zimlock or Oz to draw one, or Sanchimaru if he has the time?
I had made an attempt once that I'd posted here, but it simply doesn't come close to what real artists can make of it

There are actually quite a few remaining graphic bits that would be nice to add, so any graphics volunteers would be welcome. However, we have snowy tunnel entrances for Shinkansen tracks, so it seems odd that we don't have the non-snowy ones. But in my archive, I don't have any of the non-snowy Shinkansen tracks at all. Can somebody post the graphics file please?

OK, I am playing the game, checking for balance and other things. This takes a long long time, but I'll post my findings here, and we can hopefully make some adjustments in the next GRF. To start off with, a few complaints relating to cost:
1. The C57 is newer than the C53, both are passenger locos, but it's quite a bit - lower TE and lower HP, though the same top speed. Therefore, it should be cheaper. But it's not, it's more expensive, both to buy and to run. So, why would anyone ever use it? Either the stats are wrong, or the prices need significant adjustment.
2. The C11 and C12 tank engines are cheaper to purchase, as they should be; but they're more expensive to run than the much more powerful locos that come before them. They should be a little cheaper.
I've found that the C53 is kind of a "category killer", in that it's faster, stronger, and cheaper than locos both before and after. This is somewhat OK, in that it was a very popular loco, but I think maybe it's a little too much so.

C53 cheaper to run than C57?
yea...i thought that the C53 should be more expensive to run than the C57?

I'll have to check out tunnels, I want to make them compatible with the new tracks on tunnel patch feature.
krtaylor: gather all that kind of bugs, or things to be changed, and we will have a more clear vision of what to add/remove/change for the next version.
I want to wait until we have the buildings v1.0 ready to take the screenshots.

For full screenshots, I agree, but for the individual photos of each loco/train, it doesn't matter - because you can take pictures of them in the countryside. At least for most of them.Sanchimaru wrote: I want to wait until we have the buildings v1.0 ready to take the screenshots.
