Docks?

Post by emu »

I would like to make newgrf docks, but how should they look like? Will be ships still one-tile or more in newgrf? And shall docks be still 2x1 or more?
I made two types, just as an example how I imagine them.

If you want to really go to town on it, I would like to see fully developed docks, with berths for ships. I could then write a ship version of the airport FTA to schedule ship dockings. :)

And before Dalestan points it out, yes, I know TTDPatch can do it. I dont do Patch.

/me would not have pointed that out.
That's not a fully developed dock. That's a normal dock with a rail station attached.
To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

As ship system will be reworked, I hope the docks will be reworked too.

richk67, what do you think about you writing such a dock?
What are the requirements? I think the dock graphics are essential. However, IMO the first testing versions can use other graphics, like airport tiles.

I guess it would be possible - its just a matter of writing an FTA similar to the airport one (maybe not so complex!), and then having some good graphics to work with.

I would like to see docks work like in Emperor. A NxM shape, where one edge must be along a straight patch of coast.

I would love to see a breakwater that the ships have to enter past, then divert to the wharf, as per terminals on airports. The hovercraft should come up onto land, and dock on a flat (airport) terminal pad.

If the graphics guys can give me the materials to work with, Im sure I could do something.

Did he draw on-water tiles, or only land tiles?

Land only aswell as cranes. He also drew the matching rw platforms. If for water tiles youre talking about sea level tiles/pontoons that can be achived with canals.

I voted for the small one. It looks more efficient, with a boat coming in one side, and leaving the other.

But, for this to look good, shouldn't ship be restricted from passing through eachother first? Because right now they are the most size-efficient form of transport available. One-way canals would be cool to, to organize the way they go.

Oh, and is there going to be a harbor to put into canals? I've been waiting for that quite a long time now.

The smaller could be built in canals, but maybe there could be some modification for flat land too.
Yes, the smaller is probably better, but maybe it should be a little longer, because I think the ships (tankers and cargo ships) should be longer too. It would be much more realistic.

They mustnt be too large, because they must fit to small space between coast and edge of the map. IMO it would be the best when they are one water and one coast tile wide, and long as the biggest ship is long.

I have created a new terrain generation patch (TerraGenesis Perlin) that creates decent in/out coastlines, that often have plenty of space for larger docks. This patch will definitely be in the next Integrated Nightly, and is probably going to be the new map generator for v0.5. Check out the link in my sig.

Docks that come in two generations would be cool. Pree Containerisation (pre 1950) docks, with piers and cranes (Like those at Southampton and Liverpool pre WW2), and Containerised docks, which are long, flat, and have one edge. Michael Blunck has already enlightened us as to what they could look like.
