Standardized set of materials for use

Post by Gorre »

The main point of this topic is to provide a sophisticated pack of materials for use by any users in Blender.

Main advantages
  • - Speeding up creating of any model
    - Making the graphics look like a set
    - To attract new artsists, by making it easy for people to use and share materials
Requirements
  • - Create an universal mesh on which materials can be shown. (semi-done)
    - Create a wiki page or forum's topic with material previews and a .blend file downloads. This shall be discussed below.
So the things we should talk about are, which textures shall be claimed as official and which shall not. In which form shall users post theirs materials and previews (i prefer here, new forums topic). And also, how to handle many differents textures not only for buildings, but also for ground and vehicles.

--

I made an illustrating render. It shows one material, which is usually used as cobbelstone. You see, it's not only the ground, that's because i wanted to shown how the material looks on different types of shapes and shadows. However, we shall make a consensus on a default one to let users start making their own as soon as possible.

There are many nice looking meshes in already-done buildings by dmh_max and G0RR3, however, it would be really better if it was all unified and put into one file ready to attach to Blender.

I think this is a very good idea, but im still very inexperienced with texturing, and there doesn't seem to be a simple tutorial for this :? :(

Most of the textures will be created by Myself, Gorre and Dmh_mac i would expect.

they will then be available for others to download (so that you don't need to learn texturing at all). just select the materials for your object and viola.

however once you get experienced, you can then help contribute to the materials available.

i hope to turn this into a comprihensive material library.

Well, that's what i mean with being inexperienced with. I can only load an image, and apply that material to a mesh (object). Does anyone know where I can learn more about texturing?

The best way how to learn how to make materials in additional to reading tutorials is to download one, changing some of its atributes and see how its affecting it.

I can't play strings, I'm more of a woodwind player.

Sorry... that was really bad.

Cathedrals definitely shouldn't pop up and vanish like the rest of TT's buildings.

Sure it shouldn't, but this is not right place to discuss it, I'm going to make a topic about a flag system which would make this possible as soon as time allows it.

hey GORR3 can we start working on this?

a standardised materials set IMO is looking more and more important the further we get into it.

i already havea tonne of materials for the landscapes. but we are going to start needing things for bricks etc...

i will set upa wiki page, and start listing materials we need. we can then start filling the orders.

anyone else interested in getting into it, then feel free :D

I'm not sure about these kinds of textures (like advertisement). Well, we might have standartized "Transport Tycoon" and "OpenTTD" textures for use on trailers, but this is really low priority.
