Well, I know that Electrified Railway is not yet supported in ottd. However, I read about people using the US Renewal set -- is there a trick to make this work?

You misread. There is a US Set, and there is a UK Renewal Set, but there is not, as far as I know, a US Renewal Set.

The UK Renewal Set does mostly work, though there are issues I am working on...

Maybe you are thinking about DanMack's North American Renewal Set, which I think is intended to work with OpenTTD:
