I downloaded the TTD game using a link from this site, installed the windows version and this patch http://www.ttdpatch.net/ game works fine but runs really really fast. When I start the game at the main menu all the little planes and that are whizzing about at lightning speeds. Any help would be really nice.

Try to hit "Q" for a few times.
Or look in ttdpatch.cfg for "gamespeed" and see if it's "gamespeed 3"(fastest setting).
If so change it to "gamespeed -3"(slowest setting) or any number between -3 and 3 to change the speed of your game.
