Planeset [version 1.5.3 released 2006-10-24]
Moderator: Graphics Moderators
I worked at an aircraft refinishing place fro awhile, and aside from the B17 (The Aluminum Overcast out of Osh Kosh, WI) and PBY (From the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum), we got to work on a DC-3. Beautiful planes - I love DC-3's, they're so useful, and durable.

Dan MacKellar

Well... DC-3 is DC-3, the most built transport airplane in the world and crucial piece of emerging postwar commercial aviation. It _WILL_ stay no matter what. That's where the line is drawn.
I'll hopefully get some sprites soon for the new planes...

i guess you're a little bit wrong, the Dakota is note only post-war but pre-war too, first build in 1936 (so 3 years before war) its was also build by many countries like Russia (Lisunov 2) Japan (L2D).DC-3 is DC-3, the most built transport airplane in the world and crucial piece of emerging postwar commercial aviation.
->Dan Mack: good idea to make some B17 and catalina (harder to draw) if you need some informations instead just tell me
there are things known and things unknown and in between are the doors.
Status report:
The balancing and speed-dependent running cost multipliers have been done and now they are as viable as current situation allows. The GRF itself is ready for official 1.0 release. I'll do something for the documentation ASAP and post it here for you to see.
Attached is the PNG that has new plane sprites.

The documentation for krtaylor for adding BS to the text (and for everyone else to peek). As soon as it is G2G the official release of Planeset will occur. The plane attributes are in separate spreadsheet so don't add them there.

I have made a few very minor modifications to the Readme. Some general observations relating to the Readme:
1. You have written a very good guide as to how to start drawing / coding for TTD. I think it should be posted in the sticky for all to read. But I don't think it belongs in the Readme. I recommend we remove it, although I didn't do so yet..
2. I don't think it's a good idea to include all the graphic and NFO files in the release package. I think all it needs is the Readme and the GRF.
3. Is making a DOS version that hard? My understanding is that there's a utililty that will automatically convert between Windows and DOS; we might as well use it if it's that easy.
4. Concerning the original-livery set, we already have quite a few original liveries drawn. Have they already been coded? Once this release is out, I'm going to reset the tracking table to show just the ones that need work done on them, such as original-livery versions. Some aircraft don't really need them, e.g. the zeppelins - we don't really need to draw a version with swastikas on them, I don't think.
Other relevant comments:
I designed a rather scanty framework of a public website for the Planeset distribution. You can see it here:
http://www.as-st.com/ttd/planes
It's very similar to the one I did for the US set. However, it doesn't have the list of aircraft. Does someone, who likes aircraft, want to write up a brief description IRL of each one, please?
We will also need in-game screenshots of each aircraft, preferably not all stopped at an airport. Can people provide these please? Doesn't have to be a huge screenie, it wants to be cropped to show just the plane.
I'm glad this is so close to being finished!

459: If you use grfcodec directly: grfcodec -em 1 filename.grf will create a DOS grf from a Win PCX. If you use Andrex's GRF wizard, one of the two advanced options (on page 4) will do the trick; I'm guessing the second, but I'm not sure.
Also Wile E. Coyote has a conversion program somewhere, but I'm not sure where, nor how to use it.

To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

DaleStan: I prefer if someone who can actually test and confirm the correct behaviour of the DOS build would do it.
krtaylor: I have actually written a small text documentation file with short descriptions for each plane that might prove useful. It's been shipping in incomplete form with some of the later BETAs.
Those GRF/NFO's, drawing/coding "getting started", original TTD running cost reference and JASC file will be posted in a separate archive from now on. Thus, the Planeset distribution package will only carry the GRF, documentation, plane descriptor doc and tech spreadsheet.
I'm not going to do anything for liveries right now. After you update the tracking table following the release we'll take a look and figure the future out.
Chances are the official release will be posted here within 24 hours.

459, please post that short text file, I'll put it on the website.
If DaleStan makes a "test" DOS file, and someone with the DOS version tries it to make sure it works, that would be good enough I think.

OK people, time for rollout...
Planeset 1.0
After almost two years of slow-paced struggle it is here. The Planeset features 41 different planes for temperate, subtropical and arctic climates. Requires Windows version of TTD and TTDPatch 2.0.1 alpha 55 or newer. This version is NOT compatible with any version of OpenTTD.
Reuploaded archive with checks

Now somebody should change the topic to Planeset [Officially released, further development going on]. We'll need DOS release ASAP, someone please do it. I've posted both the Planeset and Developer files.

I split things up slightly differently, and made a couple more changes to the Readme, but it's on the site now. I'm going to go ask Andrex to mention it in the TTDXC news ticker. I'll also drop some ads elsewhere. After a week or so, if there are no major problems and we have the DOS version, we can ask Patchman to put a link to it from his site with the rest of the graphics. At that time, I'll also reset the table to show only original-livery needs.

ENOCHECKS!!!
459: You need to grab sprites 2-10 from here, or explain why you think they are unnecessary. (And yes, they must go before the action 8.) Once you do that, I'll make a DOS version.
I posted that NFO for a reason, and am a little peeved that you didn't just start from there.

The checks that I coded to ensure the correct TTDPatch version, "newplanes on", &c. simply aren't present in 459's NFO.
Alternatively, I can put them in myself and post both DOS and Win GRFs.
