Error loading game - help, please?

Post by philh »

EDIT: Title changed in the hope that people will notice this thread again and help! Please!

I have a savegame that's become corrupt. I'm using patch 2.0 rev 1 under Win XP SP2.

It has some bits of track in it that I can't remove - The competitor has gone bankrupt and removed most of the track but there are a few bits, e.g. bridges over my track, that didn't get deleted, and now form stuff that is just in the way.

This is where I explain how silly I have been...
I thought I might be able to fix this by running it through sv1fix. So, I did. That errored. So, I went to the site and discovered and downloaded a more modern version of sv1fix. That too errored. Of course, doing that twice means I also lost the TRP02.bak file. Doh! Trying to load my game again, I now get:

Whenever I try to load the game, TTD just crashes. No error, nothing, it just exits. Loading the game in TTDLX Editor gives the error message of "Unexpected Extended Vehicle Array Size."

Running it through sv1codec does nothing - it tells me the checksums are correct, turns it into a .big file fine, but errors with "unknown data at end of file" when trying to recompress.

The savegame can be downloaded from: http://www.daftmoo.co.uk/temp/trp02.zip

If someone who understands the file structure etc could have a look for me and see if it's retrievable, I'd be very very grateful, and I promise not to be so silly again!

Many thanks in advance! :-)

Can someone translate those last two lines into English? Not all of us speak Dutch. (Babelfish isn't particularly useful: "Press on enn test to demolish")

What happens if you delete TTDLOADW.OVL?
To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

Does it actually delete TTDLOADW.OVL, and if not, what happens if you delete it yourself?

Do you have the Win or DOS version of TTD? (look for GameGFX.exe, TTDX.EXE, and TYCOON.EXE. The first means Window version; the second and third, DOS)
If you have the DOS version, you'll need the DOS patch.

That's a very bad translation into dutch then. Instead of "TTDLOADW.OVL will be deleted", it should say "Try deleting TTDLOADW.OVL"...

I have the Windows version of TTD and I deleted the TTDLOAD.OVL myself.

Now the game starts, but I get a error in the game itself.

File newgrf/dbsetw.grf has an invalid sprite # 2.012 code 5/40

EDIT:

I downloaded The DBsetxl (win) and de activated DBsetw. and the problem seems to be infacting the Tropicset. (wich I don't use)

You need to update DBSet and TropicSet; they violated rules first enforced in alpha 43. http://www.ttdpatch.net/newgrf.html

Hi all,

Er, is anyone able to help me with my problem as posted initially? I feel a bit like the thread got taken over by the other problem, and everyone helped there, but I seem to have become a bit forgotton in the sets of posts. :?

If my problem is non-recoverable, please feel free to say so, and I'll just write it off as one of those things, but if someone could please have a look, I'd really appreciate it.

If someone is working on it for me, I apologise, and I'm not trying to rush you or anything, I'd just like to know.

Thanks! :)

Patchman is away on a conference.
He'll be back in a week.
Only he knows enough of the savegame structure to help you, if that is possible at all.

That's fine - At least I know that there is some hope and I've not simply been overlooked. I'm happy to wait. Thanks!

Well, I'm back now, but I doubt I'll have time to try and fix random savegames for another month or so... it doesn't sound like it's fixable anyway, so perhaps it's best if you just give up on it... :?
