I’ve found a TTD Patch alpha 55+ and downloaded it. I now keep two separate (types of) folders:
1) TTDX, containing this patch, and a whole lot of older scenarios and savegames spread over 4 different game folders (they will not show up otherwise), plus a bunch of newgrf.files that sit in a Newpraphics subfolder. What else do I need? I had an Editor once, but it does not work anymore; I get the message “Overflow 6” or something. It used to be handy for organizing the confusing duplicate ss and sv numbers.
2) Open TTD 0.4.0.1, with a few newer scenarios and savegames, which are in the subfolders Save and Scenario, and do not seem to need anything else. I have also downloaded some newgrf.files which seemed exclusively for Open TTD, and stored them in the Data folder. I then opened Openttd.cfg with NotePad, added the new newgrf.files, and saved it again. Indeed, they show up in the game under Newgrf.Settings, and I have touched Apply. Now the old TTDX contains a lot more newgrf.files; can they be used also in Open TTD or should they be kept strictly separate? Or are there websites where I can download specifically meant-for-Open TTD newgrf.files? I would like to see the DB and SBB vehicles, for instance. I have installed Mr.Hansen’s Norwegian trainset, which I thought was specifically Open TTD, but though it is listed in Newgrf.Settings, nothing can be seen under New Vehicles. Or will they show up at some time later during the game? I tried to play the downloaded savegame Hiekkaluoto Transport, but it refused, saying: “Tried to load non-existing sprite #7684. Probable cause: wrong/missing Newgrfs.” Now I want to know: where can I see a complete listing of all newgrfs that may be needed, and where do I download them ? Open TTD also seems to accept Sign Cheats, but they don’t seem to work. For planting trees there is a regular menu already, and for giving yourself money it simply ignores your cheat, and gives you 200.000 every time. As for switches in the command line, does that worknthe same as in Simutrans ? (Make shortcut of exe, then right click on shortcut to get Properties, after the “ you leave a space, and then type…….. what ?) It must be somewhere in the Manual, but I haven’t found it yet.
Now this applies to both TTDX and Open TTD: When you create a random game and then try to save it, you can give it name, but the game simply gives it its own name. (No wonder one goes nuts trying to figure out the differences, when one and the same savegame bears two names or more). For instance, the scenario might be called France, but the game will try to save it as Pompidou Transport.... Delete does not seem to do anything, so you go to the main body of the game, look it up under Save and delete it the old-fashioned way. It’s the only way that I know of, and can still be used as long as there are very few games, but earlier, with TTDX, I got completely screwed up trying to unravel my more than 140 ss and sv games there. I had to identify them one by one using WordPad first, split the lot into 4 game folders and and then do the same thing.)
Here’s another one for you geeks: My TTDX folder contains a subfolder Newgrf., but the main body of the folder contains also various bldgs., structures etc., called things like CellularTower.exe, Heliport.exe, NewAirport.exe, NewControlTower.exe, etc. but are mostly NOT found in Newgrf. Should I move these exe.files into the Newgraphics subfolder also? Or clean up and delete them ? Jack Verheydt. (j.verheydt@hetnet.nl).
