Snowline

Post by krtaylor »

As some may know, Patchman released a file "snowline.grf" which allows the snowline to be adjusted up or down. It seems to also allow snow in Temperate climates, but I'm not sure. I think you're supposed to set a numerical parameter indicating where the snowline ought to be, although maybe another GRF or scenario can override that?

Honestly, I don't know how it works, and I haven't seen much about it elsewhere, only that it exists.

So, here's the file, and if people have light to shed on it, here's the place. It's a cool idea anyway!

And if I'm stupid and there's already a thread about it, eh, just post a link and lock the thread, OK? 8)

It doesn´t need a parameter but o/c for a varied snowline you may supply one. Without, snowline defaults to a height of 7 tiles, though you may specify a parameter in the range [1 ... 15] to get a snowline from lowest to highest.

O/c, another .grf can override that value and in fact "snowline.grf" is just a demonstration that even the temperate climate has a built-in snowline (it´s set to be above max height of mountains) and that the patch would be able to change that value.

OTOH, from my opinion it´s not that useful in temperate because that climate lacks a proper set of trees. Nevertheless, it´s working perfectly for arctic and alpine climate.

regards
Michael

Is it any possibility to add something like 'tropic line'?

The desert status is applied to a single tile, not any particular height level, so, no.

Each tile is either desert, half-desert, or not-desert. Neither desert nor half-desert can become not-desert, nor the reverse, even if the height is changed.
To get a good answer, ask a Smart Question. Similarly, if you want a bug fixed, write a Useful Bug Report. No TTDPatch crashlog? Then follow directions.

Concerning the temperate trees, and trees in general, the Japanset has already encountered that limitation. We asked for the ability to have trees change with the seasons, and I suppose snowline status too. But right now the Patch doesn't offer any fancy functions for trees.

All clear. Looking forward to see that possibility in Patch. Thanx for information! :D

I don't know but would it be possible to code a variable value engine in to the snow line to control the snow line just like in the seasons. :?

I did that for OTTD (adjusting the snowline with seasons). The artic tree "automatically" followed the summer winter change. Spring could be just the distance to the snowline.

In other words, it would be part of a "seasons" patch. I imagine that would allow adjusting the snowline, and also allow trees to change with the seasons. Maybe even change the farm fields with the seasons.

It would be quite an interesting addition, given that Michael Blunck's stations do have the platform plants that cycle trhough seasons.
