Bankrupt!

Post by Steven Lalewicz »

I can't believe it, I actually went bankrupt for the first
time ever.

I made a huge blunder with my initial transport routes
which were supposed to fund my continuing expansion.
I was playing the Sub-Arctic climate on medium difficulty.
It seems to pop all the towns on hills, yuck. Anyway I
decided to try for a few subsidies for a change (instead
of my default coal to power station set up). The first
couple of subsidies were passenger ones. Because of the
lack of space, I just made a single platform station
between the two towns with a train between them. Then it
offered me another one from one of the towns I had a
station to the next. So I simply connected the end of
the other station in the middle town to the new one. Then
I set off train number two. I planted signals each end of
the middle station so the trains would not crash into one
another. All was well I thought and left to plan the rest
of my transport empire.

My initial thought was just to have one train do the route
but was not sure if it would pick up both subsidies hence
train number 2.

D D
Town1 ===--------Train1----S===S--------Train2---=== Town3
Town2
D:Depot
S:Two way signal
=== : station
--- : track

Problem one. The trains only turn at end of line. I'd
completely forgot this. I'd got used to them turning at
stations cause I'd just been playing with easy lately.
So when either train got to the middle station. It would
wait for ages until it turned round its' self. Or when
the other train popped into the depot, then trapping the
other train for a long time.

Problem two. The trains kept choosing the depot not on
their own side (because I imagine that is the first one
they saw), causing more havoc.

So ratings dropped. No passengers, no money. Spent all my
money on building the network. Was constantly in the red,
after a few years, BANKRUPT!

Anybody else got such disaster stories to share.

Regards,
Steve.

Once I wanted to know how bankrupcy looks and I built a depot, built an
expensive loco, started it and waited until game was over.

Hmm...I have, but nothing as interesting. Just basic overspending and very
big loans, which I couldn't afford to pay back.

I'd like to know that when the newspaper pops up saying "Transport company
in trouble" it says something like "the company will be sold off or declared
bankrupt unless performance increases soon."

Sold off? No matter what happens you always end up bankrupt...don't you?? I
suspect the multiplayable among us may have seen a screen come up asking
whether you would like to buy the other players company. Anyone like to shed
some light on this?

No, the game ends suddenly and you're back at the start screen. The guy
who's been doing fine usually gets a fit....

As far as I know, it's impossible to bought the other player company in the
regular way, because there's no « Buy 25 % share » button on the human
opponent company informations window. I remember that once, one of my friend
which was playing against me was about to go bankrupt (on the temperate
climate!), but I don't remember to have seen a window suggesting that I
could buy his company, but I might be wrong there as it was quite a long
time ago.

I plug my old i486 with my no longer new iPII with two Ethernet cards and a
BNC cable. Then I loaded Novell LSL, the card real-mode driver and IPXODI.
In fact, I did what everyone should do to play a network game under MS-DOS.

Yes, that's happened to me, usually in the intemperate climates.
What's more annoying is when I occasionally manage to crash a bus or
train, or destroy a station to build a bigger one or move it and the
council hates me :-(

The other problem sometimes comes on hardest settings when I can't
afford to replace any vehicles and they start to break down every
hundred yards.
I'd like to know that when the newspaper pops up saying "Transport
company in trouble" it says something like "the company will be

I don't quite understand what question you're asking here!!

When it says that an enemy may be sold off soon, the enemy in question
usually has a maximum loan and no or few vehicles, (and if any, they are
highly unprofitable), and so there is no way for said player to recoup
his losses, and so will inevitably be sold off.

When it says that *you* will shortly be sold off, you have plenty of
time to improve your financial situation. If you fail, the game just
quits back to the main screen.

Could you offer any advice for a networks newbie? I have a 5m. Null modem
and can't get tt to work on it. I can get loads of other games to work
though, using the same settings, but TT refuses to cooperate.

As long as you don't use a network card, I can't really help you. Sorry, I
didn't ever
tried to use TT on a Null-Modem connection.
And I think that you won't like to buy 2 network cards, and:
- 2 T and a BNC cable
- or a hub and 2 RJ45 cables,
do you?

Or, maybe, you could try the Windows « Direct Cable Connection » and then
add the IPX/SPX compatible protocol on each computer. Of course, you'll have
to play TTDlx under Win9x. If you didn't installed this tool, you may find
it in the Configuration panel - Add/Remove programs - Windows Installation -
Communications, Details...
