[3DTT] Signalling and slowing down and stuff

Post by Stevie D »

A little while ago we were talking about how ridiculous it is that
trains can go from 400mph to a standstill instantly. Is this going to be
improved upon in 3DTT?

What I would like to see (although you may well disagree (and in doing
so, you would be wrong, because it IS what I would like to see :-) )) is
that trains would take a little while to slow down. Obviously, better
and lighter trains could stop much more quickly.
They would slow down in time for a red signal, the end of the line or a
station stop. They would slow down if you told them to "Stop!". This
would involve re-thinking the signalling aspect.

ATM, (in the UK, anyway), is that beyond the signals is a "safe zone",
so that approaching junctions, if a train does stray a little beyond the
red signal, it won't get in the way of any other train. You would need
this in case a signal suddenly turned red when the train was very close
to it. You would probably need a message to pop-up as well, like "Signal
Passed At Danger near Wossnameville", and the train would stop until
released (but other trains in the vicinity would not necessarily stop
unless you told them to).

I don't know if that would work or not, but it's an idea.

I hope there is not so much need for a stop-command, but trains will
accelerate and stop according to technology and function.
A train will always stop in time for station halts and maneuvering. This
will be our problem to calculate when it is time to reduce speed.

The trains look a bit ahead what is going on, but to slow down willl take a
while. I think a disaster tearing off a valley/river bridge could cause the
train running into the void/water. But this will not happen with bulldozed
structures.

There will be also presignalling, so a signal before a red is yellow (slow
down!)
