I will return on January 3rd (hope Delta Airlines and the airports have
the Y2K problem fixed). The current competition is nearly at the end
right now so if we begin the new one by say next week, then I can set
an end date for the competition to be like November 30th or
thereabouts. How about it? And this time we will be playing the
Arctic. How about it?

Hmm...Most people don't play that quickly.......I personally cold have it up
to 2050 in a week but I don't others could.....
Btw I like the Artic choice....

I'm lucky if I can get enough time to do 10 years a week, so I'd never be
able to take part in competitions....

I would say the 'sequel' should be in the millenium. Or earlier maybe?

I think we should wait till this one is finished and we have a confirmed
winner.

I know it's too early to start discussing it, but what map should we
have
Arctic/Desert/ToyLand?
I would like to play on an Artic map, and I'm not the only one, I think.
It would be good if we had a vote!
Good idea.
I would like to have desert myself. I haven't got used to the Arctic
one.
It
costs too much building up all them hills.
We may solve this problem with prizes difficulty settings.
In that case that is why we SHOULD have an Artic one.....Weve just had an
easy 'lets make stupid amounts of money' And lets be honest once you had
money it was just a case of ratings wars.....

This one should be HARD.....And the Artic one is really about playing the
rules....Its harder to start, its harder to beat the AI and its REALLY
hard
to get lots of money just by letting it run for 10 years.
There is no use making a lot of money during the 10 first years, as long as
you don't buy something with it.
Opinions?
Explaining the rules/difficulty settings and giving the map on a single web
page whose URL would be explicited on this NG, that would be good!

I wouldn't mind hosting it as long as it ends before the month of

Well, what we could do is instead of beginning from 1950, have a
scenario start up around 1980 or later still (2000?). Also, taking
into account what Eddie said about contests rising in difficulty
slowly rather than drastically. I think it would be best if we started
on a Desert scenario or maybe even just a regular Tropical scenario.
Another person had stated that he would like the contest's file to be
in one place, on one web site with the web site explicitly stated here
in the NG. No problem with that...

Ooooo have you changed your name (Forgive my ignorance!)
Actually, if you look at my e-mail address I use AnkitPayal there too.
Payal is my fiancee-to-be. Being so head over heals over her, I
attached her name to mine. I am considering a name change to that
though. Oh, I also go by "Kit" sometimes.

Also, tweaking the Interest Rate as Josef suggested with
opt.dat file seems nice and will add a whole new dimension to our
competition with higher interest rates.
If we ARE going to do this we should make sure that all players don't mind
altering their files........
Also it would be good if Josef printed a step-by-step guide to doing this as
not all people will know how to alter files properly

I'm certainly interested in the next competition. But I'd prefer it if I did
not have to modify any of the files (even with easy instructions). Just call
me a purist.

I'm also getting really good at coping with the lousy start loan. Within
about 20 years I have about 1/3 million and about 30 I reach a million
pounds. After about 1/3 million, money is not really a problem (playing
sub-tropical).

So coping with the normal start loan will filter out the real tycoons from
the rest :-), and I enjoy the challange.

Plus higher inflation hurts the AI more than it does us. I read somewhere
for a real challange, make inflation lower cause it allows the AI to succeed
better.

Regards,
Steve.

If we play on a desert-only scenario (with the entire map coered by sand),
it will be quite easy, but overall, we will have to make money with goods
because there won't be lots of passengers.
It could be a good idea, especially for those who want a easy competition
first.

Just a quickie.... (ooer!! nudge nudge)

The first point of this "competition" was to involve everyone - if it was
set way too hard for the hardened players, then the "haven't played it much"
players wouldn't be able to play - and we wanted as many people as poss to
play (well, 9 is still good)

Yes, its been easy, but also enjoyable. If it was difficult, I'd get too
annoyed with it!!!!

PPS: "Is there a patch to increase the loan" ..... Josefs patch gives you
as much money as you need, then put yourself in the red after you've built
what you've needed!!!! haha!!!

Oh yeh, and that too.
Ah....The desert.......You just try that in the Sub-Arctic.....
So the sub-artic is harder? Not tried it yet. Will do soon I'm sure.

My current strategy to make money, is to have a city in the desert
to grow so it accepts goods. Money just comes pouring in when you direct
all your lines to one factory and then the goods to the select town.

The hard part is making the city grow quicky!
So do I ........I hate raising the loan....I've even started playing with
breakdowns to normal (I used to play on reduced)
I always play on medium difficulty (one day I'll brave the hardest one).

I really get fed up when it builds it tracks and station really close to a
city, stopping it from growing. Sometimes I buy out the competition just so
I can clean the place up.

Steve.

Just had a quick look at your site and at the relevant page. Noticed
that the date is March 1982.

The amount you can borrow goes up with inflation (that's why the
options refer to the Maximum _Initial_ Loan), so assuming that the
game started in 1950, I reckon you'd be able to borrow £250,000 come
1982, so I don't think that that's a cheat. Try it and see; if you can
stand clicking 25 times!

Being able to build and destroy, build and destroy, build and destroy,
(isn't copying and pasting wonderful?) the same bit of track 20 times,
at no cost - now that's a different matter.

Ah yes, so it's not cheating after all. This is often what I do. At the
start the loan may be £500,000 but within a couple of years, it goes up to
£550,000 and then continues going up.
Sorry Rick, but you'll have to take this off the site. Good job I never put
