Here's a nifty trick I found by accident today:
If you are one vehicle below the maximum limit, and attempt to buy a
double-headed engine, you get only one 'head', and pay half-price.
(a) This is useful if you have short stations and need to cram on every
truck you can
(b) If you sell it immediately, you get back the FULL cost of the
DOUBLE-head. In the 1990s this is about £500k !!

At least in TT original, I cursed one time because I tried to sell a car but
I (of course) dropped it behind the other head of the train, and it
disappeared, but still exists. I was unable to either sell it or destroy the
depot because the game said there is a train inside... I home this has been
fixed in TTDX. I haven't yet tried it.
