4-track operation

Post by Dan Ros »

Any tips from someone who has installed a 4-track system? i.e. a line
each for fast and slow trains in both directions.

Well, I mean trains that stop more often, local services versus goods
and express services.

Any chance of mailing me a saved game, as an example?
If you .ZIP it up, its only a 100k or so....

I'm interested in having a look. If anyone else is, I could then put
screenshots, etc on my site.....

Cheers

Okay, it's on its way. I have installed a short system where most
passenger services run on the fast line, and goods or stopping passenger
trains run on the slow line.

I also use a network which I have tried to base on how a real railway
works- by minimizing induvidual lines and using main lines for all
traffic. Tell me what you think.

I tried, but it just got too big and ungainly. I rarely have need for more
than 2 tracks between stations anyway. I often have a four track platform
leading off into two sets of two tracks if you know what I mean. Two tracks
go to a farm, and two to a steel mill and the other side goes to the main
rail network to deliver goods. (The station is at a factory btw)...

Just some thoughts...

I have some real corridors in some savegames. I.E.4x4 iron ore mines,
and 1 single steelmill on the other side of the map. It all started with
one single track, now I've 6 tracks. I will upload them one of these
days. I guess you may be interessed in the files.

Yeah, youre right there, its only 4-track on a shortish stretch (half
map) on my busiest line. Now that I have (painstakingly) replaced all my
network with maglevs they are a bit underused, since the trains go much
faster, I need fewer trains.

Playing TTO or Dx?
If you're using the original, you should keep the two tracks (ie fast &
slow) entirely separate, running them side-by-side (not inside/outside, as
is often the case in real life). That way you can have 2 Ro-Ro stations at
each end in the same 4-track station. (The disadvantage of doing this is
that it does reduce the number of people living in your catchment area, but
it is still the most efficient way to run termini.
It is easier to 'walk' a station across the fast tracks if some of the towns
you are serving are on the 'wrong' side, rather than to have the slow tracks
cross the fast tracks at any point.

A handy hint for anyone trying to run up-down lines in TTO is to
periodically have this junction:

---X-\
---X---
\-X---

(this is set for left-running: if you have right-running, take a mirror
image)
This ensures that
(a) all trains that are currently running can not cross to the other tracks,
(b) trains that are wrong-running are more likely to correct themselves by
going straight, than to continue wrong-running by branching off,
(c) trains can pass in opposite directions at the same time.

This will not work too well if your line changes direction a lot,
particularly if the next destination is a long way away and off to the
right, but for the most part, it keeps trains running the right way.

Good luck with running a 'realistic' system ... after trying it, it's not
difficult to see why the AI doesn't

Stephen
