auto path generator with autorail

Post by Wolf01 »

i think that is possible, maybe with a little help from the AI players..
what i mean? i click here...

Code: Select all

X-------\
        | /------\
        | | |
        \---------/ |
                         |
       /-----------------/
       |
       X
...and here, and the AI builds a rail for me with the best path, trying to have a straight path, auto tunnel/bridge if possible and curves to avoid obstacles, like the old "spaghetti" AI but a lot improved and controlled by the user

I for one will never use it :?

If you where to alter the autorail tool so that one click starts placing and a second one ends the trail like some games do it would possibly be usfeull but this...

...let's just say I don't trust the AI LOL

the fun thing about OTTD = IMHO the building, if the AI is taking over I have nothing to do!

I think this would also help to improve the AI, because then you can see the bugs and you can reproduce them. Then you can adjust the AI much better.

I voted "I don't like it", mainly because I'm thinking of MP games. It really should not end up in there because it will create advantages over those who prefer playing without autorail(who like a clean/self-made system).

Altough in SP I wouldn't give a cracker about it, actually, what you guys said. It is a great way to see problems/improve the AI building.

I would not use it. Like someone said, the fun of OTTD is building... this feature and the copy&paste takes all that is fun (for me) in OTTD. I dont care if it's there, but I wont use it.

precisely, this is what everyone should feel, but they should NOT deny it to other players by campaigning against it

My goal in OTTD is to beat everyone else. Therofre I will level land and build the same, efficient junctions everywhere, and the same ro-ro 2 platform, 5 sqaure long stations everywhere. This would be a real efficient feature for me.

Maybe it could be a server side patch so it could be disabled for competitions etc, but I have to agree it would be a most useful patch and also help track down 'issues' with AI route finding. Adding checkboxes to allow/diallow terraforming, bridges, tunnels etc would be cool - even a slider from cheap -> efficient would maybe be possible. It could open up a whole new way of building networks...

To be honest, I think it would be very cool to have a mode of play where you get some AI assistance, so you'd effectively be working to direct the AI towards the route you want to develop and could have as much or as little influence ove rthem as possible. I know that a lot of people are against this, however, I think by making it optional, it can't hurt :-)

someone answered for a copy'n'paste tool for junctions and stations... why not an autopath tool which is less intrusive?
i don't mean that the autopath will build all the 6 way mega-railway for you, but only find the best way to build a railway

i love build junctions and stations, but i get bored when i have to cross all the 2^10*2^10 map with an almost straight railway

Interesting as a debugging tool, but that's about it. I certainly wouldn't want to be playing with it.

Besides, I have a tendancy to do earthworks by hand, and this idea doesn't really cater for that.
First stop Wondabyne, then all stations to Zig Zag via the North Shore Line...

HI ALL!
I think this could be not oly a useful instrument to value the AI functionality, but also a way to simplify the game to people approacing it the first time...

I agree that building myself the best route IS the goal of the game, but sincerely i got frustrated when i had to build my first simples routes between two far points...

in the other hand, it would be an help in being quick to get a sponsored track vs the cpu players....

it's a matter a game difficulty level, i think!

BYE!
Vincze

PS
0.4.0: great work! having a so large map was a dream of mine....
