Planeset [version 1.5.3 released 2006-10-24]
Moderator: Graphics Moderators
Whoa. That looks so good, I have to wonder, does it use only the TTD palette?
I think the shape is maybe slightly wrong, but what a great start! I wish we'd known about you when we were having fits trying to get the Zeps right manually!

Wow, no disrespect to DaleStan, but that's really great.
We have two zeppelins in the set, the Graf Zeppelin and the Hindenburg. You can see photos and links to more on the tracking page:

I figured both Zeps would be grey, as you have them, with company-colored tailfin logos.

I know the perspective of the photos is a little off, we had an extensive discussion about them when DaleStan was drawing them.
- The Graf Zeppelin is basically a straight cylinder, except at the very front and rear where it tapers rather quickly. What you have for the Graf is the right front and rear, but it's too short in the middle. Make the middle longer, keeping the same diameter through the entire additional section, and leaving the ends as they are. I'd say overall it should be 1/3 longer.
- The Hindenburg is not so cylindrical, it's much more tapered, especially at the rear. Your Hindenburg is pretty good, but I think the rear taper needs to start probably 3 or 4 pixels closer to the front, from where it currently does.
Are you sure the background is the correct blue, and also the magic company-color blue? They seem to be the same color, at least, I cannot see part of the fins.

Hindenburg is great except I think the fins should be slightly longer. I mean, extend them maybe 3 more pixels towards the front.
Graf is a little too cylindrical now. Let both the nose and tail slope sections extend 3 more pixels towards the center.
On both of them, I think the rotation might be a little off in the straight-horizontal views. You look down on the vehicles from above. The diagonals and vertical represent that very well, and I know the side views are rotated some, I just think maybe a tad more. I would say that the top tailfin should have its base visibly below the curve of the body, maybe by 1 pixel.

For the Graf, the nose is still a little too pointy. Let the slope start 5 pixels further back. The rear is good I think.
30 is not enough, maybe 40? I'm not sure what the actual angle in TTD is.
Otherwise, almost there!
Is there any way to realistically add the horizontal ribs? They'll add texture.

30° creates exactly the 2-to-the-side-1-up-line the tiles have.
it's probably only not visible cuz the pixels are too coarse. have a look at the tail fin facing you and you'll see that it's pretty well rolled forwards.
the ribs are gonna be tricky, cuz i'm using a cubic spline object which won't make edges.

This is really a different way of making TTD graphics. Maybe when we get the Zeps right, you should try your hand at tank-cars.
Oh, and I wrote the wrong comment about the Graf. I said the nose was too pointy. Wrong, I mean that it wasn't pointy enough. Sorry.

I think we now have the zeppelins about perfect. The only way they could be improved is if it is possible to add the specific plate shading and ribs.
As far as tankers, I've not been totally happy with the tankers in the US set, and the ones in the Japan set are not as well defined as I'd like. But they're good enough, so I've left them alone because many attempts were made and the ones we have now are passable.
Road tankers I think are more regular cylinders and thus easier to draw; George seems to pretty well have a handle on them.
The other advantage to rendering round shapes like you do, is that it makes it much easier to generate different liveries. Particularly in the US set, lots of liveries is useful.
Have you played the US set, Aydan?
