TT on Sega Saturn

Post by Iron Draggon »

Well, this might be of interest to some of you here. Did you know that there's an import version of Transport Tycoon for the Sega Saturn? I just won myself a nice new factory sealed copy of it on ebay for under $10. So if you were the guy who I outbid for it, sorry, but I did see it first.

Anyhow, I have no idea if the game is in English or Japanese, but I'll soon find out whenever it gets here. Hopefully, it's all in English, since I can't read a word of Japanese, but if it isn't, maybe some of you hardcore TT players here can tell me what all the buttons in all the menus are for.

I've been collecting import strategy games for the Saturn for a while now, so when I saw this, I had to have it. I figured that I might as well pick it up, just to see what it's like, out of curiosity. I can't do very much in any of the other import strategy games that I've been buying either, due to all the Japanese in them, but usually I can still figure out at least enough to make something happen, so I thought what the heck, play TT in Japanese!

So, I'll report my findings here whenever the game arrives, and I've had a chance to check it out. If nothing else, it'll be an interesting addition to my collection, and if I decide that I don't wanna keep it after all, maybe one of you folks would be interested in owning it as a curiosity for your own collection. Anyhow, that's all I know about it for now, so sayonara, fellas!

you could download Transport Tycoon from one of the links in the download section to see what the buttons are
Alcohol is not the answer, it just makes you forget the question.

I have copies of both the PSX and Saturn version, I think. I've got one of them, at least, and have seen the other one. Honestly can't remember, not dug those out in ages...

I like your name and avatar, IronDragon, I've seen that game but never played it. I prefer Rail Baron myself as a RR board game, I've played that probably 100s of times.

Well I just got it in the mail, and sure enough, it's completely in Japanese!

So this will probably just be more of yet another curiosity in my collection.

The graphics do look very nice though, much better than the screenshots of the PSX version in the other thread here. I wish that I had some way of grabbing a few screenshots from it so I could post them here for you all to see. However, I have no way of doing that at this time, unfortunately.

I will note that as of yet I've found no 3D view or even a 3D cinematic introduction sequence, as seen in the PSX version in the other thread here. It seems to be a direct port of TT in Japanese with currency in yen. So if I can ever learn how to play it this way, it should be an interesting experience.

It comes with a very thick manual and a very thick strategy guide, both of course entirely in Japanese as well. So about all that I'm ever going to be able to get out of it is the satisfaction of knowing that I do own it, and possibly learning how to play it in this way. I don't think that I'll be trying to learn how to read Japanese anytime soon though, although that would help me with this game and all of my other import games tremendously.

So, it's basically just standard TT in Japanese on the Sega Saturn system.

The cost including the shipping & handling was a mere $12.00 American.

P.S.: krtaylor, thank you for the compliment! I have yet to play the game myself either, nor do I own a copy of it at this time, but I do want to get a copy of it sometime. I hear that it's a very nice game, despite its oddities. Perhaps at some point, I'll pick up a copy of Rail Baron to try out as well. I have yet to play any RR board games, but I do play several of them on PC. I own Railroad Tycoon 2 & 3, Railroad Pioneer, & Rails Across America.
