Ah, but does yours contain the original installation files, or is it just a zip of the installed files? Mine is the former. With the latter, you would probably be able to compress it better though.

Why have the installation if its not needed. Much easier if you can just click on a file and it works. In most cases anyway.

Ah, but it's much nicer and more polished to have an installation program. ;)

If you can be bothered making it though.

That depends. Would people rather have a smaller download and no installaion. Or a bigger download with one!

Well I suppose people who are beginners at computers want installation.
Experts don't. Better to have a choice.
Thanks,

So you'd be quite happy to install Office XP or Windows XP without an installation program?

As I mentioned in another thread, I'm going to be using Windows Installer for my apps from now on. This doesn't add much to the download size (unlike InstallShield) - TTDAlter 4.0.9 is 1.85MB with Windows Installer, compared with 3.08MB with InstallShield! You may need to download Windows Installer first, but that's a one-off download. I've also integrated TTDAlter with Windows Installer in that before it tries to open TTDINFO.DAT, VEHINFO.DAT or the help file, it checks to see if they exist. If not, it tells Windows Installer, "Oi! You! Put back <blahblah.dat>. Now!", and it does.

but you don't download Office XP do you. It's only small programs you download most of the time and all large programs have installations.

Even so, which would you rather do:

1. Extract all the files in ttdalter-4.0.9.zip to a temporary folder.
2. Copy TTDALTER.EXE, TTDALTER.CHM, TTDINFO.DAT, VEHINFO.DAT, AMERICAN.DAT, ENGLISH.DAT, FRENCH.DAT, GERMAN.DAT, SPANISH.DAT, README.TXT and CHANGES.TXT to C:\Program Files\Owen Rudge\TTDAlter.

3. Copy MSVBVM60.DLL, OLEPRO32.DLL, COMDLG32.OCX, MSCOMCT2.OCX, MHINI32.OCX, MHRUN32.DLL, etc, to your WINDOWS\SYSTEM (or SYSTEM32) directory, ensuring you don't overwrite any older files.

3. Self-register all OCX files, etc. (Not strictly necessary though).

4. Add various entries to the registry (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Owen Rudge\InstalledSoftware\TTDAlter, etc).

OR:

1. Run SETUP.EXE.

I know which I'd prefer. And think of uninstalling programs manually too...
