Spread of cities swamping industries!
Hi,
Has this been covered elsewhere? Please direct me to thread if it has.
I think something has to be done about the way the cities expand and swamp surrounding industries such as forests, farms, etc. I also think that we should be able to buy land, as in TTD, to prevent cities building roads over railway tracks, etc.

It's the same with me, i've not properly played locomotion for ages because of this. I want to, but can't because the town growth becomes ridiculous and unrealistic.
Nobody seems to be interested in trying to fix this, all we ever do is just talk about how annoying it is!!

Mod trackst.dat so that it is only compatible with tram rails and small gauge rails. So, disable roadcrossings. The code that expands cities can't deal with that, so it is possible to "box in" a city until you (the player) are ready to make the city grow. This works for me.ajy170 wrote:Why can't they fix? In ttd patch they had a switch you could controller it with so why can't you do the same now with locomotion?????????????? Because it is really fing me off! I can't expand my food processing plant because of it

That would work as temporary fix, but it means circling every town with track, which would be messy and unrealistic.
We need a proper fix that will change the growth rate of the town.

I don't think that town growth is completely unrealistic. I move about 600 passengers to a town and it grows about 3 - 4 squares in all directions.
Only thing that pisses me off, and it did in TTD, roads being built over the railway right next to a station or 1 or 2 squares away from another crossing.
You have to think Brisbane,QLD has grown heaps in the last 2 years it has nearly added another 40% more housing than it has in the late 90s.
I live in Jimboomba, QLD and out there (rural area) it has grown also. and there is no train station, airport, dock, trams just a few busses 1 or 2 a day.
Although it is possible and would be welcomed a mod that can change the growth rate.
I've had industries in Loco get swamped by the town. I just stoped taking stuff there and it closed down. Making more homes and therefore more passengers and mail for me to make money.

Hmm, but you move passengers away from a town. But the town's population does not shrink.Derek McD wrote:I don't think that town growth is completely unrealistic. I move about 600 passengers to a town and it grows about 3 - 4 squares in all directions.
Even i do not resettle if i get off a vehicle in a town.

I play only self-made scenarios with 6 to 10 cities.
Most time they have place enough to grow without 'eating away' industry.
Ok, i know that this 'solution' ist not really satisfying...

Has towns get bigger more children a born and more people want to buy homes/rent homes and then more get built. The towns grow even if there is not transport in the town.
There are not many places I have been to where the once big town has shrunk becasue people move away.
My great grandparents lived in a small town in central NSW and now on our last holiday to visit family down there, we drove through the town and it had grown. This is a town with no Rail, Bus, Air, Sea transport. And I have seen this happen in Locomotion and Transport before the patch to modify the growth rate was developed.
Althought it would be handy, to show you have true skill in the game you should be able to build around it. I managed to build a 8 platform train station in a town with over 20 000 people. It took some time but it was there and made my money.
There are many industries on the map so if one gets swamped by a town transport it elsewhere. Use a centralised rail network if you have to. The waypoints come in handy for this.

I'll think of expanding the station to allocate passenger traffic. For mines near small towns I did try to build 2 mixed trains, with 6 coal cars followed by a passenger coach. Only when I found that those passenger coaches can't handle the traffic I started an EMU or two for the line.Derek McD wrote:There are many industries on the map so if one gets swamped by a town transport it elsewhere. The Scenario editor allows you to set the size of cities in any scenario.
Sadly this only seems to control their starting size. I'd really like to be able to set their maximum size.
When the cities are up to medium or large size I can develop some very nice rail networks around them. When they get larger they start to swamp the map and it kills the ability to make realistic looking networks.
The mega cities would be better if the tall office buildings were confined to the centres and the outskirts were low rise suburban houses etc. Then you could have a big city terminal in the middle surrounded by offices and some smaller suburban stations surrounded by single houses.

I like that idea. Although it would require more deconstruction of the game code. It would stop them building a crossing right infront of the main station in my network. kinda make me angry becasue everytime i go back there is road on the track.singaporekid_92 wrote:Maybe someone could make a track that looks like a fence and doesn't allow anything to pass through?
