Well I bought the full version of Locomotion today after playing the demo. What an amazing game! I really don't understand very much yet but I'm still hooked
Does anybody have any ideas for the beginning of the game? Should I start with railroads or only do roads and trucks?
I've started a simple railroad (with 3 trains) running between the 3 towns but my rating hovers around 6.0 and I'm not making much money what-so-ever. In fact I even took out an extra $5,000 in a loan.
As you can tell I'm not very good at this game... yet.
I found that if you get 1 good train run going, you can make $80k-$100k per year from it, and use the profits to build more + I like the oil rigs for big profits after, but I am also new
I found in the original that the best way to make money is the farm to factory route. Since I'm 2 hours away from getting my copy (I'm at work and the local stores didn't get it till today), I don't know if this is still true.
don't be afraid to get a huge loan (as much as you can get) and invest heavily in some good routes. Just make sure that the money you get back from this venture covers your loan repayments and that you have enough spare cash lying around to start building stuff off your profits rather than the loan (which you then start to pay back).
Yeah the game's rather simple... to bad many of the strategic options (such as buying an enemy etc. are gone).
First of, Start with a simple route, maybe passengers or some industrie.. with that money you should equip two cities with a Tram network, with 6 or seven stations each (I found it easiest to make just one route, no circle or any crossings) and put some trams in that network, then make fast forward... two years or so later, you should get two large cities, and making profit with them is as easy as it can get.

Have quite a small route, with one passenger train. Youll notice it makes money nearly 100% of the time. Then just expand from here, being carefull.
Trams are an excellent way to increase city sizes. Buses, dont bother with them.
The best money is definitley in hauling goods. Dont make the trains too long though, or they will take a long time to load up, thus giving you less cash. Try and find a nice balance between profit and running expenses.
If you look at your company incomes, there is a tab telling you the current profit from each commodity. You get the most money by far for passengers, but if you take any more than 15 to 20 days, the decrease in profits is dramatic. Steel is one of the highest of the other commodities and the profit does not decrease much for taking a while. Basically, steel and passengers are good, but you have to get the coal and iron ore to the factory to get steel first, and you get a lot less tons of steel than all the tons of coal and iron ore you took there.

For 60 tons of coal and 60 tons of iron ore I got 34 tons of steel.
I was playing the computer, and left it on Fast Forward, just to see how they progressed - 1 of the computer players had 3 concords which made him $13 million / year - thats insane for this game compared to what you make in other things like coal etc
