Wrong Speed Calculation???

Post by CC »

Hi i found some strange behavior of the Speed Calculation.
I have 2 nearly identical trains transporting corn and livestock (don't know the original names for these goods, but i think u know what i mean.) from two diffrent farms to one factory.
I'm using DB XL Set. First Train is powered by BR01 the other one by BR05. Both Machines have nearly same HP (2240 and 2360) only the topspeed differs a bit more (130/165km/h). Both Trains have 3 waggons for corn and 5 for livestock. Cause the last one is a bit newer he can carry 28tons corn/waggon and the other one 25. So the weight when fully load is 271/284tons which is only les more, but the second train has also some hp more so this should no big deal.

The station where they have to unload the goods is on a hill so when the presignal is close, they have to stop at the hill and start again. Train one (little less HP, topspeed and weight) speedsup to 40 km/h train two only reaches 1km/h. How can this be?? I'm using mountains 3333 (realistic) but this isn't realistic :)

For better understandig i attached two Screens with the different trains at the problematic hill.

However, there is something more involved than you see, depending on which alpha version you are using. The later alphas use a more realistic loco power modeling algorithm. The HP isn't the sole measure of a loco's strength, there's a new parameter called Tractive Effort (TE). The TE measures a loco's ability to start loads from a stop, and to pull them up hills. You can have all the HP in the world and low TE, and you won't be able to get the load started. Once you have enough TE to accelerate at all, the HP controls the maximum speed you can reach (against wind resistance and friction). Since passenger cars are much lighter, HP is more important for passenger locos; since freight is much heavier, particularly with the freighttrains switch on, TE is more important for those.

In the purchase list window in recent alphas.

Correct on both counts.

Using a BR05 for freight trains isn't correct, but using these steam engines without tender is just ... *argh* Isn't there a possibility to connect a steam engine to a tender, just the way multiheaded engines are now connected since alpha 3x (dunno exactly which one it was), so that tenders are automatically bought when buying a steam engine?

TE stands for Traction Effort IIRC..

No, krtaylor was right above, it's "tractive effort".

I'm so sorry, but there is no remark which engine to use with which sort of wagons. And the Tender... ok most times i'm simply to lazy to add it. I can't remember the first time i played TT. I only know it was in the begining of my PC career. I must have been about 10 years old. And it was the old Version of TT not the deluxe one. In this time the game was a joke to the thing it's now. I never had to think about Tender or such things. Also presignals where only a vision. In this time you had to build one track for each train. Everything else would have caust a big jam. Farms where twice as complex as normal cause you couldn't transport both goods with one train, cause the train only drove out when both goods where full. So most times one of the goods growed up and up.

It's true that there is now a way for the tender to automatically appear when you buy the loco, but that's a relatively new feature, and the DBXL set hasn't been upgraded to make use of it. As far as freight locos vs. passenger locos, the TE indicates which is which, but it doesn't make very much difference unless you have the freighttrains switch on, which makes freight (but not passengers) weigh realistically more.
