cost estimation in 0.3.0 - other implementation

Post by fabca2 »

Hello,
First, let's me thanks the guys who worked on this project,
I know it's not easy.

I would suggest another implementation of the "cost estimation".
now you have to use Shift and the to click (as you were build) to get a red window where amount is displayed.

First,
I would suggest to avoid this window, but to use the status bar instead.

Second,
and the price to be displayed without need to release mouse.
and only durring shift is pressed.
let me explain :

I want to buy 10 tiles of road and to know the price before,
I must select tool "road",
drag.. and move to 10 tiles, press the shift and release the mouse (drop), now I got the information (the price)..
I just need to start again.. (drag... move... release)

instead of that I would prefer :
I select the tool "road"
I start to drag, move to 10 tiles, press shift (the price is displayed now in the status bas at the bottom, I can release the shift),
and release the mouse to build my 10 tiles roads

is my explanations understoodable ?

I like the second part of your idea, but I don't think I'd like it in the status window. The price should still appear close to the cursor, just not in a box that requires 'closing'.

Well generally you do a price check to find out how expensive something would be, and if it would be a good idea to go ahead with your plan.

If you force people to execute their building plans after they do a check, one of the main purposes of the feature would have disappeared into Tycoon Nothingness!

How about if you hold shift down when you unclick, then it doesn't build it? So basically similar to how it is now, but you don't have to unclick to get the price to appear.

I think the chance that you accidentally release shift too fast or too slow is too big then.

Maybe something like "Hold CTRL+Shift to build after price shown, hold Shift to just show the price and don't build" or something would be better...

You can still press ESC to stop buying this. you are not "forced"
and this "problem" won't occurs on item like "rail station" (no drag-release)

It will in the next release. With drag&drop stations.

What about a simple system like that :

- no more use of shift or any key
- price is displayed in a floating text that follow the mouse at anytime when you hold the louse button down

=> In other words : let's building normally, but display price beside the cursor while the mouse button is not relased. Just hit escape key as now to cancel building ?

It should be easier to implement, and more confortable tu use isn't it ?

for me it's totally ok if we can avoid this popup red windows...

if we don't use shift, it's ok but the concept of floating text may not be too difficult ? (that something I didn't see yet in OTTD...)
that's why I suggested to use status bar..

remark : the advantage of the shift is for "railroad station", in this case we don't need to start clicking (and canceling by ESC)

but whatever, I don't find 0.3.0 system usefull (waste of time each time)
in any case I will agree on the one who will submit a patch to fix this :)

Well I like the floating value thingie.

When you build a station, you still see the number of cells you select being highlighted. So it would make some sence to see the cost of the structure if you were to click on that spot.

Yes, but on huge screen (I use a 22" screen using 1280*1024 resolution) the status bar should be too far for looking price. But if floating text is too much hard to implement, it's a solution then.

This problem should be fixed with "drag&drop" stations. But I agree, problem stays for road stations, airports and docs... and depots.
