Both only work with ECS currently, although it should be easy to modify them for FIRS. Both force the player to use shortest routes possible instead of longest routes possible.
Max tiles paid
This limits the number of tiles paid per trip. The idea is to remove the easiest way to win games currently - by building super-long illogical routes and getting more than your train is worth in a single trip. Instead you'll have to build many local routes and live off the tiny (but not totally not ridiculous!) profits they make. Of course, you still can carry stuff across the map, but now it actually costs you money (running cost) to do so.

Buy, process, sell
With this GRF you only get paid for delivering Goods, Food and Gasoline to cities, and you get paid fixed amount regardless of time/distance. Not only that, but you also pay for the raw goods yourself. Basically, in this mode you play not as a transport company, but as a goods/food manufacturer. The gameplay is quite hard, actually, but fun. The multipliers still need some fine tuning, although I'm currently playing it with "32 16 192 96 96" (goods 192, v1 default everything else) and after an hour of playing I made so much profit I can now afford a train.
I'm not sure what to do with passengers/mail/tourists yet, for now they pay per distance, but very small amounts. Also, there is absolutely no reason to deliver coal to a power station. Yay green energy.

There's a server up for each of these where you can try them if you wish. These are called "ttd.nn.lv" and more info is at http://ttd.nn.lv
