Portland / Vancouver

Post by Loconoob »

Well, needless to say, I'm addicted to making new maps of cool places... and now I've created/am in the making of another. This is going to be the greater Portland and Vancouver area. The main rail companies we get through here are Union Pacific, BNSF, and Amtrak. It's a really busy line, so there are randomly sprawled staging areas and yards. Portland is also a major port city, having easy access to the ocean via the Columbia, so it has A LOT of shipping and freight industries within a few miles of the urban center. I've only traveled through there about 100 times or more, so I have a descent idea of what it looks like with the scenery and what not. I'm wanting to take a Blue Beetle route on this and release both a modded and un-modded version of it as I go, to include various save games along the way. In order for the possibility of any profit to be made, I'm altering the routes a touch, but mostly they will follow the satellite pictures, to include major city streets, the I-5 corridor, the airports, and the scenery. So far I've completed the initial land forming, but it took a while when I realized the Columbia came out wrong...

This is what I started with:

And this is what I finished with:
End.PNG
End.PNG (560.08 KiB) Viewed 9865 times

As someone who lives in Portland/Vancouver I am extremely interested in this map/scenario! Are you planning on including Lake Oswego (the body of water)? Also can you provide a download link of just your terrain! I would absolutely LOVE to play around with this! :)

Thanks,

Absolutely, though it might take a while to get it done. This is because I've sort of gotten stuck in SimCity4 Deluxe. I will definetly get to that map though and I'll send you the terrain. Btw, would you mind if the finished map will require some mods to use, as these make it more accurate and I can provide the names and links to them :)
Ohh, also, with the just terrain, do you want it ground texture painted and populated with the appropriate vegetation, or just blank?

Haha! SC4 is so addicting!! I might need to fire that up again sometime in the near future as well.

As far as the map goes. I'd love one with the vegetation, but if you don't have that complete yet I'd be ok with the just the terrain! :)

Alrighty then, I'll give you the terrain cause it's gonna take a while to get the map done :)

Edit-March 9, 2013- I've run into some problems with the scale; the highways/ tracks are just to big to fit inside of the map area (within the right routes) so I'm making a smaller section of Portland blown up to the normal map size, which would help detail aswell. If you still want the original map that's fine though :)

I've only recently come across OpenTTD. I was a huge fan of the original TTD for Windows, but can't get it to work well anymore. Anywho, I've always tried to make maps of the Columbia Gorge with Sim City(s) and have never gotten too much success. I've tried making heightmaps of the pacific northwest but the method the website suggests keeps failing (I think the elevation maps are too big (500+ MB). Anywho, any chance your map can extend into the Gorge? I'm a Hood River resident and I'd love to play your map (especially) if it integrates my home too.

OOPS, I may have spoken too quickly. This subset of this forum is for "Locomotion". I've never played that and wonder if this (and other) map(s) will work on OpenTTD????

I would love to try to fit your house in if it is within the new cropped area I'm restarting, but sadly I'm pretty sure this won't work with tt, and as for the hight mapping, I had to download it from a German fan page, and then mess with it on some graphics programs. Sorry ;)

That's OK. I think I've figured out how to use smaller file sizes anyway. I will hopefully make one of the NW focused around the Gorge soon (and that would include Portland/Vancouver also focused in.

I'd definitely still love the original map if you're willing to share! I've also bookmarked this thread as to keep up to date with your new work as well! Let me know how you prefer to send the map (Dropbox, email, etc). :)

Thanks!

Sorry guys for the slow work progress but my mouth got me grounded from the computer awhile ago and I will be grounded another 3 weeks, where progress may continue but will be cut off by my summer vacation up to Oregon and Washington until August. I will try to get as much done as I can and will not forget about cone august's return to AZ! :)

Update- Well, I can say that this project is going to take quite a while, especially since I'm differing whether to make a smaller portion of Portland or not. Also to add to the boring wait, I can't get to my computer to play Lomo until I return to Arizona from vacation in early August... BUT HAVEN'T A FEAR PORTLAND LOVERS AND GENERAL ENTHUSIASTS OF ME! I WILL NOT FORGET TO FINISH THIS, OR HESITATE TO MAKE NEW ONES!

Looks good! Will you use the US Set, and add towns/industries?

Upon request of course... However I do hope to keep the map mostly mod free so anyone can use it... I've already put in towns, but not industries because I didn't know whether some other modders wanted their stuff in the map... Anything specific you'd like to see added to the map? :D
