Hatfield and Stainforth Subsidence

Post by Badger »

So this has dominated my working life for the last 2 days!

It appears the spoil heap next to the line wishes to be elsewhere. Estimates for a reopened railway are about 3 weeks, maybe a month.

You have no idea how much a panicked for a second then thinking that was Hatfield Hertfordshire.

I remember something similar happening just over a decade ago on the Settle & Carlisle route. Except one line was still operational so you could roll along side and see land literally missing from under the track. Have photos of that somewhere too.

Edit:
Ah wait, I've just looked at the other photos. I thought the track was on-top of a hill there and the subsidence was over it. Didn't realise that it was a hillside to the side that had slipped down onto the track.

That's looking towards Doncaster, Hatfield station is just visible in background. Left to right it's up slow, up fast, down fast, down slow.
All started with a small dip on the down fast, then went to "single line" working using the up fast, finally down to just the up slow for last services Monday night. Staff on site could hear the ballast moving without any trains present.
Estimates now stand at 8 weeks to get it right!!

Oh, in the pic, the up fast is under the down fast and slow!!

The power that subsidence has though is mighty impressive!

Its been quite entertaining to see the increasingly contorted pictures posted by FTP on facebook over the last couple of days!

It's fine, the line is still a continuous rail, you just have to slot down a bit...and maybe get all the passengers to lean over to one side. :P
