severe performance problem

Post by mausie »

i am having severe performance issues when i play the game with my

Pentium 4 @ 3.4 GHz
3 GB ram
HD 3850
Windows 7

when i play with my laptop celeron 1.4 the game is smooth, the laptop uses windows xp

I installed openttd 1.3.0 + nightly and the game is lagging.
It makes me want to stop the game.
I copied my save game from my laptop to my desktop, I don't know if this matters

When a train is moving u actually see that it is lagging like the system does not have enough power

Can you upload your savegame? I can't reproduce this with r24917.

What is your CPU usage according to the Task Manager?

You can just attach it to your post, below the reply field there is a form to add attachments (don't forget to press Add file).

r24917 is a newer version than the beta.

See the wiki. I don't know what value it should have (or what value is preferred).

even 24922 does not work

sprite size changed from 128 --> 256 --> no change.
the game like it is running on a 120 mhz pentium 1 and becomes a slide show

Sprite cache size 64 will do.

Thank you for the screenshot but there is little we can do with that ...
Please upload your savegame too so people can have a look at number of active AIs and other system slowing factors.

ps:
There is an edit button under your previous posts when you are logged in ...
It would be nice if you could use it if you have something to add in a timespan of minutes; it will remain active for seven days (just in case you would ever want to correct info, or whatever, later on) ;)

The forum allows files up to 6MB; if your file is bigger you will have to upload it somewhere else and post the link to it.

If you really have no clue where to put it ... maybe create a windows live account (just for the purpose of sharing files) and put it in a public skydrive folder.

Well, you're playing with a very large map, with loads of towns and industries. This is simply a very resource-demanding thing to do. A performance problem on non-high-end machines under such circumstances is to be expected.

In the future, I suggest playing with a smaller map, that will help the most.

Your game runs fine here, but I've got a considerably better processor than a P4. I'm wondering if the issue is with autosaving, since you only have a single threaded processor.

I agree with Supercheese, perhaps you should consider playing on smaller maps. Your savegame contains a thousand towns and over three thousand industries, 95% of which you have never interacted with in 240 years of gameplay. Why waste processor time on such vast expanses of untouched scenery?

Yep, that went fine. ;)

Your game seems to run fine, compared to other games and considering the circomstances.

I think your biggest problem is with the mapsize and the number of towns and industries present.
If you do not want to start a new game on a smaller map (almost no-one fills a 1024 *1024 map alone) which will give the biggest boost, I would start by decimating at least half of the cities and industries in the scenario-editor (you can always re-add some if you run out of things to transport).

That does not explain why on each of your computers it runs at different speeds ofcourse.
Difference in hardware (memory, graphics card), configuration, OS?
Does it happen with other games too? Ifso give your old p4 some room to breathe and install XP or a flavour of Linux.
Maybe a silly question but you do test with the same revision and same config file on both machines?
Did you start this game with an older version and are doing something you did not do before ... zooming in a lot or using ZBase?

You could try disabling autosave, if you have autosave enabled. Maybe that will help.

Could be that those 3D shooters run better as they do not hanled the entire map (and everything in it) at once at any single point in time, which OpenTTD does ... from beginning to end.
Does your celeron handle Crisis well?

Anyway, no-one is saying that there can not be something else at hand ...
Can you post your config file too please (remove the passwords if there are any)?
