An early version of the BR set. I had to dig deep into the forum to find it, spent a long time the other night just going backwards through the graphics forum to see what i could dig out (found those PGS single platform stations while i was searching). I think it was the anniversary version of the BR set. It was far from complete and it has problems....the biggest one being that the Cl170's change livery when they turn in a station! I can't remember where i found the set now...but quite a few pages in on the graphics forum is a thread where someone is asking about the BR set and someone replied with this GRF. Some nice looking trains in the there...the 165/365/465 being the nicest...the electrostars looks excellent too.

Edit: found the relevant thread...goes back 3 years mind, so don't go replying to it!

You are my hero, Gord. As for the 170 that changes when it goes into stations, in the WAS, our latest test grf has a Northwest B747-200 that is perfectly painted throughout flight, until approach and landing, when it suddenly turns colourless, but when it turns off the runway, it becomes bright red again. Strange.

Lost that last game i'm afraid. So I've started a new one and i'm doing this one properly...no money cheats.

Its 1851 and I'm using the UK map. The aim is to look for and build profitable passenger routes, (possibly some freight if connections end up in the right direction) Any services making losses will be cut. It'll be interesting to see what kind of network i'm left with and if it ends up looking like the real British network.

The United Kingdom Transport company set up it headquarters in London in 1850. Its first ambition was to take passengers from the city to the coast. A line has been laid from South London to the coast at Brighton with horses and carts bringing in passengers from central London to the new station. A beand new 2-2-2 general steam engine and 6 coaches have been bought for the job. By the end of 1851 the service had made a £6371 profit. Not too bad but not enough to go ahead with plans to double the track and double the frequency. However, the company are looking at the possibility of building lines to other seaside towns. A branch to Eastbourne from the Brighton line would be the cheapest option.

Anyway, the screenshots:

First of all, South London station:

Next is a stop at Reigate, where the engine sheds have been built.

And finally, after stops at Crawley and Heywards Heath, Brighton. Two stations have been built, Brighton Town and Brighton Beach:

Edit: and i've just spotted the useless bridge in London!

The Eastbourne branch is built with a junction at Crawley from the Brighton line. The company decided to install a passing loop between Crawley and Reigate and add a platform at London to accomadate the Eastbourne train. The Eastbourne branch also calls at Uckfield and Hailsham. The Eastborune service made a loss in its first year and was very nearly scrapped..however, it made a small profit in its second year and its third year of service looks good enough to keep the service running. The Brighton service is now making £13,000 a year. Small steps for this company!

Here is the junction at Crawley:

Sure, I'm not using all of them right now...and some of them are old and outdated...but here they are:

Meanwhile...a new line has been built from London to Southend...calling at Grays. And boy have i found a real profit maker here. Southend obviously more popular than Brighton and Eastbourne. Future money might have to be spent upgrading this line. A new station at East London has been built and i'm actually having capacity problems with the horses and carts bringing passengers out of central London.

Anyway, here is East London

Its Jon Scaife's Uk 2.0 scenario. I've added a lot of stuff to it myself though.

The UK again, but different this time. I've started in the modern day and using Towns and Industry, I've rebuilt the towns but made them all very small just because I thought it would be interesting to see which ones would grow compared to real life. I've kept London large as i need a big city as a starting point.

Anyway, I thought i'd have a go at building what was the Great Central first. I decided that if it was still running, it would have a variety of sprinters and voyagers on it...except between Manchester Picadilly and Sheffield Victoria which is served by an EMU. Stations aren't exact replicas though!

Here are some pictures

First, a Sheffield Victoria-London Marylebone train arrives in platform 1 while an Aylesbury-London Marylebone sits in platform 3.

Next is Leicester Central, a Leicester-London stopping train leaves the southbound bay platform as a London Marylebone-Nottingham Victoria express departs heading north.

Finally, Woodford Halse, as a Manchester Picadilly-London Marylebone train whizzes past...notice the hastily added road tunnel to give underground access to the platforms!

Not sure what former inetrcity line i'll build next...thinking of doing London Paddington-Birkenhead Woodhouse with the ferry to Liverpool.

Not bad at all, except a. Why have you used jpg screens instead of png? b. Where the feck is Woodford Halse, and why is it in the scenario?

First of all...whoops.... keep forgetting in paint when i crop them to save them as png...i will have to remember next time.

Next, Woodford Halse was once quite an important place on the Great Central, one of its important junctions. ...its between Daventry and Banbury.

And finally, i wanted it in the scenario...could have grown into a town had the Great Central survived. I've got Melton Constable in Norfolk in my scenario for the same reason.

I did notice the jpg thing earlier after i had posted and hped it wouldn't get noticed...looking back through my thread, i've forgotten quite a bit haven't i!

Melton Constable qualifies as a town if the criteria of a town is based on the existence of a kebab shop.

Bloody good kebabs too.

Good criteria :-)

I liked your inclusion of the isle of sodor in an older game (page 2 I think) - shame you never posted any screenies of it though. Although to be picky, the island actually does exist - the real name is Walney; the good Rev Awdry just made it a whole lot bigger :-)

The "Other railway" stops, in theory, in Barrow - which did actually have main line services from London at one stage but now is a piddly, pathetic little 3-platform station with a train each direction most hours.

Lovely photos though - inspiring me to go back and do some more work on the BRset - but I want some of these networkers etc running! :-)

Not to mention the fact that Barrow is an absolute dump.

Thank you. I do like playing semi-ficational games, playing 'what-if' scenarios or just seeing how things pan out on real maps. Another one i like doing on the UK map is having the tiny village of Dunwich on the Suffolk coast as a massive city...as it was hundreds of years ago before it fell into the sea...I think the East Suffolk line might be a little more used if that was the case!

I remember adding Sodor on one of my games! That was a bit of fun. I was using the cargodest with infrastructure build for that one and Sodor had its own railway company! Class 90's running from Knapford to Euston!

I'm also preparing a USA map...but am going to run it in a very british way..(apoligies to american members of this forum). pendolinos running where the Acela runs....Eurostars on the west coast (though would they techincally have the name Eurostars? What about Ameristars or Pacificstars?!) . Sprinters running rural routes across the midwest. i lived in Columbus, Ohio for 2 years and will give that place its passenger trains back! (Though that might happen in reality soon).

I like using old main stations as my focal points...i'be already mentioned Birkenhead Woodhouse. The old Birmingham Snow Hill is fun to build so you can tunnel under the city and put Moor Street on the other side. You might remember me including Norwich Victoria in one of my games. I've even tried to add all 3 stations at Great Yarmouth but it got a bit crowded...and Lowestoft was in the way!

I get a bit silly with my games

I've not played OTTD in quite a few weeks now. I've been mucking around on Simutrans instead. I've been playing Simutrans very sandbox kind of building towns and extending the map as i go along...something i can't do on ottd if i want to use cargodist. (Since my first box of lego 25 years ago i've just wanted to build stuff!)

I was using the OTTD scenario editor on US coast to coast to put in all the places that Amtrak stop at and was going to play that game and have almost done it...but like my British game i end up with very small places i've never heard of before. I might still start the game though, see where it goes.

But the new release of UKRS or project thing-a-me (forgotten the name....sorry!) might tempt me back to play OTTD again. And when BROS gets there i'll certainly be tempted. Also liking the look of the fictional train set being built. And cargodist seems to be going quite well..i think i've finally sussed out the settings i need for the games i play, (I like very large maps with areas of towns....but quite big distances between those areas so it doesn't become overhwhelming connecting everything)

So lots to get me going again, and my simutrans game is very slow going and i need to try something else!

By the way, the station building on
my brain hurts.PNG
back on page 3, is it possible to find in a grf pack?
May the source be with you.
