But if you committed murder, then surely you can be tried for it, no?

If It's legal to shoot the scottish person then surely if he gets killed then it'd be manslaughter rather than murder.

First you need to define a Scotsman. Yes, until recently it was technically legal to shoot (and by implication end the life) of a Scot within the city walls under a city defence statute, and it didn't constitute murder (which is a common law crime; there's literally no statutory law against it). That didn't mean you weren't breaking other laws, the penalties of which could be as onerous. Also, the family of the deceased might sue you.

I think you'll find that if you try it now, you'll find that the Law Commission have sorted it out. So, if you deliberately end Owen, within or without the walls, with an arrow or otherwise, you'll be looking at charges of murder.

On the up-side, you're no longer breaking the law if you don't practice archery every weekend under supervision of the local clergy. That got repealed at about the same time.

pfft. When I first joined there were no fancy meets. We had to use imagination to think what others looked and sounded like.

Odd how some people's personalities are exactly as you'd imagine them, whereas others are completely different!

Unfortunately, since under-16s (or under-18s, possibly) are not legally adults, there are issues when it comes to responsibility and so on - Andel and the rest of the organisers basically cannot be responsible for the welfare of children at the meet, so unless you bring your parents, we regretfully can't have you come to the meet this year.

I quite agree, especially when it involves a minor travelling a considerable distance on the train alone. My brother, age 14 ran off to London on his own the other month to meet a friend. Unfortunately, it happened to be the day when a plane crashed into the WCML and mass confusion at Euston... :/

Can't we have them sign something that we are not liable for anything they do etc?

As I understand it, minors cannot enter into contracts/legal agreements like that.
AFAICT having the "responsible adult" make a "minor ignorant of legalities and responsibility" (essentially the law's interpretation of youths) sign that they are responsible for themselves, and essentially absolving the responsible adults of the need to be responsible, would be generally frowned upon.

It also means I'd have to get insurance, CRB checks... its too much hassle for a fairly informal but organised meet.

So - sorry... even 18s are pushing it but I have a little tolerance. This year we won't be converging on a pub :)

I'd be more worried what might be thought of us...

Any chance we could move the date as I'm in France for the week before and after!

It won't be the same without me there - and not just because it'll be quieter!

Late July works for me too, but doesn't matter if you don't want to move it.

Hmmm - I very nearly booked an Edinburgh hotel tonight for the 8th - 10th
If the date's going to be changed, would I be able to have a guarantee of not being changed again? :) - sorry to be a spanner in the works!
