Thank you, Pingaware.

Grandunion Railroad 1958

Finally, the GURR decided to connect the two standard gauge systems; at first the idea was to build a line (Starming Division) from Newbay to Fen City but mountains are too much high, so the project was changed a little: the new line ended up not in Fen City but in Puntfingburg, served by the well known Mountain and Balradon Divisions (but they are narrow gauge, so standard gauge lines aren't all connected). As the Starming Division passes close to an iron ore mine, and as close to Puntfingburg there is Tatfingbourne with its steel mill, the GURR decided to build a branch from Panville Jct to the mine in Little Flendighead (problem one "take-the-iron-ore" was resolved). Problem two was to find the ROW for a standard gauge track between Puntfingburg and Tatfingbourne: the solution was:
1) to build a new narrow gauge northbound main close to the southbound main
2) to remove the old northbound main (BTW, it was the first track that climbed the mountain between these two cities)
3) to lay a standard gauge track over the scrapped narrow gauge northbound main.
Incidentally, the new narrow gauge main was laid west of the southbound track, so between Tatfingbourne and Puntfingburg trains run left-hand!

The empty ore train, leaded by FP7A #1502, is approaching the new standard gauge station in Puntfingburg (called Starming station) where the doodlebug #501 is waiting to service and turn in the enginehouse. On the narrow gauge southbound main the old Mikado 141 (year 1916!!!) is on the point of a Rylesvalley North – Puntfingburg Barladon (via Tatfingbourne) passenger train.

Like the Barladon Division, the Starming Division is quite isolated; again the empty ore train meeting the other doodlebug (#500) in service on this line.

The two doodlebugs now in service on the Starming Division were transferred from Vradhill – Springfield route; now this service sees two trains leaded by two new Geeps. On of them, the 1754, has just met an express to Puningbury Central leaded by an A + B set of FP7's (#1500). Nosing out Liminham station is Pacific #2311.

The updated and complete map of the whole transportation network. Now the GURR has:
1 bus
4 ships
51 trains
31 trolleys
87 vehicles in total 8)
and I'm proud that this system is working quite good without those enormous and unrealistic junctions

Those are some fantastic shots! I like the way how your network grows in a realistic way and creates some very nice looking junctions.

Thank you very much! Until now all my junctions are at one level without flyovers (apart where two gauge meet, is there someone that wants to design a dual gauge track system? It will be very useful).

I've just started a new game (but the GURR hasn't been forgotten, of course) using the same scenario of the famous Amecheer's Ludwigshafenbahn.

Dresden Eisenbahn AG 1921

In 1920 a new railway company was consolidated in Dresden with the purpose to enhance the economy of the area and improve transport. After one year and a half, the DEAG "owns" more than 800 000 DM of debits, but also six good and profitable trains running on two separate systems at the north and south ends of the world.

I just spotted this post from the other room to the PC. For some reason I think the doorway to the room where my PC is has shrunk. How odd! ;)
Interesting to see how your game has developed similarily to mine (obviously because of the location of the industries - I did unfortunately forget to place a sawmill!) Ludwigshafen is a bit of a pain in the arse to expand in the future!

Some years later the DEAG decided to create a passenger route between Ludwigshafen and Magdeburg, so Ludwigshafen station was expanded. Then, with a second route to Hamburg in planning that would have created some traffic problems, the freight trains were diverted to a new yard (Ludwigshafen Güterbahnhof) closing completely the town inside an iron curtain! The only solution for the Burgmeister to acquire more estate was to order the construction of a bridge across the bay  .

My first line was to Magdeburg but it was closed in the 50s and replaced by trams. Strangely rail services have returned to Magdeburg but they don't skirt round the bay any more because of a number of obstacles, namely over railways, oil refineries and housing!

I think it's interesting how different persons can play with the same game. By the way, comparing your sceenshots with mine I've seen that Hamburg in your game had 494 inhabitants in 1963; in my game has 513 in 1929! So, here is the next installment:

Dresden Eisenbahn AG 1929

Because of huge debits the DEAG cannot expand very fast, just step by step. Finally now there is a new line from Ludwigshafen up to Dresden via Hamburg served by two passenger trains that reverse in Ludwigshafen to go to Magdeburg; the line sees also a grain/livestock train from the farm in Dresden to Ludwigshafen Güterbahnhof. On the northern part of the world a tram service started between Regensburg (former Ratisbon, but this is the English name, not the German!) and Leverkusen with four TW21 (series 001 – 004) while in Regensburg there is also an urban loop tramway (Ringbahn) with four T24 (series 020 – 023); the last addition is a bus service between Regensburg and Zwickau via Leverkusen and Herne (thanks to the "Ameecherchaussee" that links these towns) with four Doppeldeckerbusse (series 100 – 103).

Buses and trams between Regensburg and Leverkusen. By the way, why the DEAG is still keeping trams between these two towns when the rubber-tyred vehicles are faster and bigger?

The infamous Ludwigshafen iron curtain has got more iron for the joy and the pleasure of the citizens: the Personenbahnhof has been elevated at the same level of the freight bypass to find space for a third track (new passenger trains will be added as soon as possible). The mixed train (passengers/mail/goods) from Dresden has just pulled in station while the freight to Hamburg Bauernhof is playing little music with the swtiches. Look at the Ludwigshafen Bahnbetriebswerk where all DEAG locomotives are repaired.

Diesel is coming! Now the DEAG has got a twin set of VT 137 used on the Wilhelmshaven – Göttingen line, while a V 140 has replaced the last 92 still in use on the southern half of the network.

The #920 has just crossed the river and is knoking in Ludwigshafen Pbf. You can see the latest layout of the Pbf and Gbf complex; now passenger trains turn inside the little depot on the left. The track going off screen to the west should arrive one day or another to Hagen but at present it ends in the woods. That BR 18 is useless and is stored waiting for better moments.

Freights G12-C are coal trains, G14-F G15-F and G16-F are grain/livestock trains, 21 are local passenger/mail trains, G51-I and G-52-C carry iron and coal. In red the Straßenbahen, in green the bus route and in blue the ferry. Easy, isn't it?

Dresden Eisenbahn AG 1939

Not easy, indeed, to keep efficient a railway network. Just after last installment a sawmill was born in Göttingen: soon I started a wood service between a forest close to Dresden (in fact it is in Aachen but the siding is branching from Dresden, so it's got the name "Dresden Ladestelle") and this new industry via a new track connection in Wilhelmshaven to avoid reversing there. In the meantime I connected Plauen with the freight-only line that arrives in Leverkusen Zeche, so a second Schnellzug non-stop service started between Wilhelmshaven and Regensburg while a local train called in Plauen, too, where passegers could take trains to Göttingen that ended here instead that Wilhelmshaven. As in Regensburg there is another forest, a second wood train started to run between this city and Göttingen; very good, you think, but the line between Plauen and Göttingen is single track and not so easy to double: freight and passenger trains continued to fight one against the other. The only solution was to build a line between Göttingen and Dresden where to divert passenger trains (route E = Eilzug 21 Ludwigshafen Personenbahnhof – Göttingen with stop only in Aachen), while the old line to Plauen now is for freights only. (By the way, as the time in TT is running too fast, when I arrived in 1944 I put back the clock in 1938.)

In fact the E21 trains don't pass via Dresden passenger station as the new line to Göttingen branches off the mainline Ludwigshafen – Wilhelmshaven BEFORE the station. You can also spot the wood train Dresden Lst – Göttingen Gbf rocking on the switches: actually it could take the new line via Aachen (shortening the distance), too, but this would cause again disruptions to passenger trains.

Dresden Eisenbahn AG 1941

Finally Hamm is connected to the network: now citizens of the three biggest towns (Regensburg, Ludwigshafen and Hamm) can take DEAG trains to move around the world. Of course the passenger and mail train network has been reorganized again; now we have the following routes (see also the attached map):

11) Magdeburg – Ludwigshafen Personenbahnhof – Hamburg – Dresden (with goods)
13) Ludwigshafen Pbf – Gelsenkirchen (with goods)
E18) Osnabrück – Ludwigshafen Pbf – Dresden – Wilhelmshaven
20) Regensburg – Plauen – Wilhelmshaven – Zwickau – Stuttgart – Hamm
D20) Regensburg – Wilhelmshaven – Hamm
E21) Ludwigshafen Pbf – Aachen – Göttingen (no mail)

These routes should remain for a while in the future; the only problem that the DEAG must resolve very fast is to provide a mail service to Aachen and Göttingen (route E21 is served by VT 137's that don't have mail compartment).

The freight services remain as in the precedent installment; the only two changes are that the farm train originating in Dresden is going in Göttingen, and that a new freight-only short line links Heidelberg farm with the food processing plant in Gelsenkirchen.

In the meantime the interurban tram and bus roster has been renovated with new vehicles, but the overcrowding is still a big problem between Regensburg and Leverkusen; rumors say that an electric S-Bahn line will be built between these cities retaining tram tracks just for the mail service.

In the 1939 installment I showed you the new Regensburg station, big but empty. Now the station is renamed Regensburg Hauptbahnhof and is served by an interesting number of trains: if you decide to spend a day here you can spot Schnellzüge and local trains to Hamm, a mail-only train to Göttingen via Wilhelmshaven and Dresden, a wood train to Göttingen (but this one via the shorter freight-only line Plauen – Göttingen), a goods train from Göttingen (same route of the previous one); if you walk a little along the throat (but first ask to railwaymen the permission to do this  ) you can arrive at the switch to the Krupp steel mill (Anschlußstelle Regensburg Industriestammgleis) where coal and iron trains leave the mainline to enter inside the industrial area.
An empty ore train is entering the mainline at Anschlußstelle Regensburg Industriestammgleis heading to Zwickau iron mine. The parallel track is hold by the empty goods train to Göttingen Gbf; both train has just meet a Schnellzug from Hamm. Of course, at the Überleitstelle Regensburg Donaubrücke the BR 45 will switch from the left to the right track. That little BR 92 was used to bring ore from Mönchengladbach mine to the Krupp plant; when the mine closed the loco and its train was placed there to wait the scrap man.

Although Regensburg Hbf is the main station on the DEAG network, Plauen is the busiest. Just in this photo you can spot four train: a Schnellzug to Hamm, the empty farm train Göttingen Gbf – Dresden (that is slowing down the Schnellzug, it seems that the dispatcher is not working good!), the wood train Dresden – Göttingen Gbf (that one descending the line on the left), the wood train Regensburg Hbf – Göttingen Gbf (that one waiting in the siding adiacent to the platforms). Other trains that are not here at the moment are two wood trains to Plauen Sägewerk (from Wilhlemshaven Lst and Leverkusen Waldfrieden), the locals Regensburg Hbf – Hamm, the iron train Zwickau Bergwerk – Regensburg Krupp, the mail-only train Regensburg Hbf – Göttingen. Lots of traffic, but this deserve a better track layout: look at the irrational north throat!

At present I connected almost all the industries; still not served are just two iron mines, a power plant and a group of oil wells: the mines because the Krupp plant is quite close to iron ore saturation, the oil wells because there aren't oil refinery, yet. The connection to the power plant (in Hamm) will be my best goal.

Two pics relating to the dark side of the railway company. In 1944 I started to extend the coal-only line ending in Schwerin to Hamm where lies another coal plant. I added also a little passenger station in Schwerin with the idea to institute a local service from Hamm; I was in the point to complete the line when a new coal mine was born very close to Hamm and its power plant. Now I have no purpose to finish this new railway; instead I extended the tramway system in Hamm to connect both the mine and the plant. So, now Schwerin is rounded by a track that is going nowhere. Perhaps I can use it to push in old equipment that I don't need to use.
The #381 has just unloaded the coal and now is going to pass the never-used switch to the unfinished extension to Schwerin passenger station and Hamm.

When I built Wilhelmshaven station I decided to be foreseeing building a track for goods train that would have arrived here in the future; but in fact goods aren't accepted here and the track, never used, was disconnected when I rebuilt the junction.
Two trains (a Schnellzug to Regensburg and an Eilzug to Ludwigshafen) are leaving side by side Wilhelmshaven. Before works (when the freight track was still connected) this double departure was impossible due to wrong switches.

Something more enjoyful: this year has seen the extension of Regensburg's Vorortbahn west of the city to Mönchengladbach; the Vorortbahnhof and the Hauptbahnhof are now connected via a bridge across the city centre. From the Hbf to the Abzweigstelle (former Überleitstelle) Regensburg Donaubrücke the suburban trains use the existing tracks but there are plans to add a third or perhaps also a fourth track to enhance train flowing in and out the busy terminal.
EMU's #870 and #871 meet on the elvated section between the Hbf and the Vorortbf. You can also see a mail tram running to Leverkusen.

Very nice screenshots! Regensburg in particular I like a lot.
If I may ask, with what grf does the depot come?
Life's like a play in a theatre,
Life's like a dream,
If life could be expressed in a sound,
It would sound like Dream Theater...

Hey ISA, thanks. :D
Life's like a play in a theatre,
Life's like a dream,
If life could be expressed in a sound,
It would sound like Dream Theater...

Dresden Eisenbahn AG 1948

On the steep grades between Regensburg and Plauen I found that Regensburg – Hamm Schnellzüge were slowed down by freights too often; so I decided to build a passenger-only new line with less grades between Regensburg and Zwickau via Hernerpass. This new line had caused to rebuild completely the Regensburg rail complex; now the Donau is crossed by three double track lines, from west: the Vorortbahn to Mönchengladbach, the old Plauenerbahn to Whilemshaven via the Plauenerpass, the new Ostfalenbahn to Hamm via Hernerpass.

The first train using the new line through the Hernerpass is crossing the Donau. At the time of the photo there wasn't a connection between the Plauenerbahn and the Ostfalenbahn south of the river, yet. Now this connection allows to mail-only trains to Hamm to use the freight tracks in Regensburg and then to take the new line via the Hernerpass.

Lots of tracks in Zwickau, indeed, but not without a reason. These track complex where the Schnellzug is running is know as "Zwickau Bahnhof" and allows to train coming from Regensburg via both lines to continue to Hamm via Zwickau Stadt or via the cut-off.

And I thought my trackwork round Zwickau was bad! Certainly a challenging location, being right down in that hole. ;)
