krtaylor: I have 7 complete charts for trucks - from early 1920 ones to futuristic ones. Some of these you know of tropicset, some were never used. I'd like to find some use for them :)

NO!
Keep working on what is needed - but read the rest of this post...

Yes, that's true. No new sprites will be included in the first release. But they WILL be in the next revision, which I imagine will follow not that long afterwards. So don't worry about it, just keep drawing...

Please post this straightway. I've been trying to get a complete vehicles set, including the Long Vehicles, all the way from 1921, and I think George is coming 'round. So we certainly would find this most helpful.

My Thoughts on Gondolas

I don't like any of the gondolas that are currently in the set. (Yes, I know, we aren't going to change them before the first release...) I don't mean the coil cars, those are fine. But none of the cars listed as "gondolas" look realistic. Here's what I'd like to see:

Gondola carrying goods:
Image

You can see it's full of various-shaped crates. We don't need the hobo though. :-)

Gondola carrying steel:
Image

Notice it's stacked full of steel beams. Sheet steel is never shipped in flat sheets like plywood (like we have in the current gondolas), it's always sent in coils (which we have in our coil car.) A gondola would be used to carry I-beams, tubular steel, or pipes. I'd say we should have all three, as random appearances, very similar to what is in the DBXL set but with American-appearing gondola cars.

Gondolas don't carry grain and never did. Before the modern hopper car, grain went in boxcars. Likewise, fruit doesn't go in a gondola, it goes in a reefer; and food goes in a reefer, a boxcar, or a hopper (flour).

So I think our gondola needs only two refittable cargoes: goods (in crates), and steel (beams, pipes, as described).

We already have a woodchip gondola/hopper, which appears in with the log cars, as it ought.

steel beam gondola
on the left - transport, on the right - load (note, 1/3 loaded transport does not have clamps to hold the load - wagon sides will work ok there)

I like that, uzurpator! Just what I was looking for.

In the gondolas list, there's an empty blue one that isn't used for anything. Can you make a load for it?

mnorman, how is the Shay coming on? Dan, how's the open autoracks?

Right now, I believe DanMacK and mnorman are the only ones with things they are still working on. Can we have a status on those please? That way if there is anything abandoned, we can reassign it to singaporekid.

Singaporekid, we already do have an Atlantic, it's the Hiawatha.

I like your Shay. I do not believe mnorman will mind if you finish it up. Please do!

By 1921, unstreamlined Atlantics were obsolete because they were too weak. The Hiawatha was a special very-high-speed locomotive that pulled short, light express shuttle trains.

DanMacK has been arguing for that for a long time, he even drew one view of it. But I honestly don't see the operational slot for it. What would it do that the Berkshire or Mountain can't do? It would be hard to tell it apart from the Berkshire or Mountain also, I think. We did need to include an Atlantic and a Hudson, and so we added the most famous and easily recognized of each, which are the NYC streamlined Hudson and the streamlined Hiawatha.

Right now the delay is due to Oracle's life suddenly becoming very busy, thus pushing back the time when all the encoding will be finished. It's pretty close, but there's some debugging left. We won't be adding any more graphics before the first release, but I'm still collecting the remaining graphics that I want, so as to have them ready to go into the first revision.

As soon as all the train graphics are finished to our satisfaction, we'll be starting on the next phase, most likely American-style stations and/or buildings. uzurpator has proposed we add some American road vehicles, and while I don't know if it would be best for them to be included in the main GRF file, they certainly would be released in some useful way, as we could definitely use very early vehicles.

Thanks for the reply, and thanks for not getting annoyed (I've been invovled in A LOT of projects where people dont liek the question at all). I'm not really very good with graphics editing, but if I can be helpful with anything I'll try.
